NEWS; August Newsletter

Goodbye to our Swans; Friday 13th July marked our 2nd graduation ceremony for 22 Street Lane Nursery. The time has come, the ”Swans” children have fled the 22 Street Lane Nursery nest in order to embark upon their next journey – ‘Big School’. A very special occasion on so many levels, an emotional day yet so important for the Nursery to celebrate the transition whilst embracing the time our Swans children spent with the 22 Street Lane Nursery family, all good things have to come to an end . Dear Parents and Carers, We have most certainly been enjoying the summer here at 22SLN, the children have benefited from hours of sunshine in our newly developed garden, as well as explored in the mud kitchen, and sand and water play areas! As August begins we are delighted to be able to provide another month of celebrations and fun packed activities for all to enjoy. Here is our latest news roundup and some information points to share with everyone.

In celebration of the Swans graduation we have created a dedicated ‘Graduation Page’ on the 22 Street Lane Nursery website; you can read all about the day and also view our ‘Graduation Presentation’ that showcases our ceremony presentation, capturing the Swans special day. http://www.22streetlanenursery.co.uk/news/ graduation2018/ Well done to all our Swan children who Graduated from 22 Street Lane Nursery!

World Cup Fun! Despite England not making it through to the World Cup Final, the children showed their support by wearing their football kits and the England flag colours, making flags and exploring England messy play. This was also a lovely opportunity to teach the children about other countries and cultures which were taking part in the world cup. The children talked about their favourite players and took part in our 22SLN penalty shootout, I think we may have some future stars in the making.

The grass is greener at 22 Street Lane Nursery!

Out with the old in with the new, we just had to let the old turf go, it simply wasn’t practical, required masses of maintenance and didn’t live up to the turbulent English weather. I hope you have all had chance to try out our new artificial grass. It makes for an amazing play area that can be open to the elements, come rain or shine. The children were extremely patient, feedback for the continued investment got a big thumbs up from the children, hopefully the excessive mud baths are now a thing of the past. BEFORE

Beach Party Week; With the glorious sunshine set to continue and the children’s love for sand and water pay we will be having a beach party themed week from the 6th – 10th August. Activities will include: • Making Boats • Creating our own fruit kebabs and summer punch • Beach ball games • Sandcastle competitions • Sand and water play • Sun safety All children are welcome to wear their Beach party clothes on Wednesday 8th August. Fingers crossed the sunshine lasts!

Tips to keep your children safe in the sun; • Encourage your child to play in the shade – for example, under trees - especially between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest. • Keep babies under the age of six months out of direct sunlight, especially around midday. • Cover exposed parts of your child's skin with sunscreen, even on cloudy or overcast days. Use one that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or above and is effective against UVA and UVB. Don't forget to apply it to their shoulders, nose, ears, cheeks, and the tops of their feet. Reapply often throughout the day. • Be especially careful to protect your child's shoulders and the back of their neck when they're playing, as these are the most common areas for sunburn. • Cover your child up in loose cotton clothes, such as an oversized T-shirt with sleeves. • Get your child to wear a floppy hat with a wide brim that shades their face and neck. • Protect your child's eyes with sunglasses that meet the British Standard (BSEN 1836:2005) and carry the CE mark – check the label. • If your child is swimming, use a waterproof sunblock of factor 15 or above. Reapply after towelling.

Chicklets The chicklets have enjoyed many activities such as sand play, dancing, playing with the play dough, foam play, doing their best animal impressions with the animal puppets, cooking us some lunch and shredded paper play! We have also had some little hairdressers in the Chicklets this week! Many of the Chicklets noticed that myself, Sophie, Lucy's and some of their friend’s hair was a mess so began to brush it with the brush and 'dry' it with the hairdryer. To continue to follow this interest we are going to set up an activity with the baby dolls, brushes, hair dryer and rollers so that they can style the dolls hair. Home Link: If you have any spare brushes, rollers or hair accessories it would be really appreciated if you could bring them in for the children to play with (please and thank you!).

Ducklings The Ducklings have been making the most of the sunny weather and have enjoyed summer walks to Roundhay Park. They enjoyed feeding the ducks and running on the grass. They have also really enjoyed water play and have been exploring where water comes from such as taps and shower heads! We also noticed that a lot of our Ducklings enjoy going to Starbucks with their mummies and daddies we decided to set up a Starbucks role play area! The children absolutely loved this and spent lots of time filling, emptying, tipping and pouring. To enhance this further we set up a Starbucks inspired messy play activity using tea bags, water, lemon and orange slices!

Goslings The Goslings children have been making their own fruit smoothie popsicles to stay cool in the heat. Firstly, the children chose which fruit they would like to use, they chose strawberries, bananas and raspberries. The children helped to cut the fruit up then they mixed it with yogurt. Next, Chloe showed the children how to blend the fruit then they poured it into ice pop containers. The children really enjoyed this activity but even more so eating them at the end! Home Learning: Can your child make these at home using different fruits? We would love to see any

of the children cooking/baking on Tapestry. Can you encourage your child to use cutlery?

Cygnets The Cygnets children started a ‘Kindness Box’ project last week. The children beautifully decorated a box and the Teachers explained to the children that there a people less fortunate than us and we are making the box to help them. We asked the children what they thought they could put in the box to give to other people, the children suggested things such as clothes, pyjamas and a pretty dress, food (potatoes and chicken, nappies, toys, dinosaurs, butterflies and even a hug! We will be talking to the children about this project again, we kindly ask families if they would like to donate anything to our box. We will be filling this box to give to a local charity.

Many thanks The Cygnets

Swans Our Swans children are soon to be flying the 22 Street Lane nest to join their new ‘Big Schools’ To support our children in this transition we have made links with the schools that our children will be attending, met the teachers and shared valuable information about each individual child. Some of the children have been visited by their teachers over the last few weeks, giving them the opportunity to begin to form a strong bond with their new teacher in a familiar environment.
