22 Street Lane Nursery - June 2018 Newsletter

June Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our June Newsletter and as always, we would like to give a very warm welcome to all children, parents and new families who joined 22 Street Lane Nursery last month. The children enjoyed the start of a very British summer, and besides a few spots of rain, they were able to benefit from many days of wonderful sunshine. We held many outdoor classes and events in the nursery garden last month, such as the Royal Wedding Tea Party, in addition to the visit from Zoo Lab and celebrating Italian Week. There’s much more planned at 22 Street Lane over the summer months, with a Father’s Day Picnic, the Swans Graduation/Leaver’s Trip and Pirate Week all to come in June!

Zoo Lab showcase a range of exotic animals and creepy crawlies to the Swans and Cygnets We had a bunch of very special visitors at 22 Street Lane Nursery during May… Zoo Lab are the UK’s No.1 animal handling experience and lifelong learning company; they specialise in introducing early years children to amazing exotic animals in a fun learning environment. Matt, the animal handler, carefully introduced the Swans and Cygnet children to lots of interesting animals such as; rats, stick insects, giant African land snails, cockroaches, giant millipedes, a corn snake, tree frogs and a tarantula. Some of the children decided to be brave and explore further by stroking the lizard and the snake! The children enjoyed learning all about the creepy crawlies and how we should respect all living things, no matter how big or small. We would like to say a big thank you to Zoo Lab for coming to visit us, we had an amazing day!

The Swans children will continue to take it in turns to visit the Chicklets over the next few months. Ducklings The Ducklings children have loved the outdoors and exploring our giant sandpit, they loved it so much that the Ducklings team made their very own beach indoors! The children used spades, buckets, large shells, rakes and pebbles to investigate the sand and how to transport and change it by adding to water. Many of our children really enjoy emptying and filling containers which is a natural part of a child’s development and is an aspect of schematic play. We will be continuing to support this play over the next few weeks by providing different resources for the children to empty and fill. Another interest which has recently emerged is climbing into the furniture in our home corner, a favourite is the sink!!! Children at this age like to feel a sense of enclosure and to hide ‘inside things’, to support this will be introducing cardboard box play, den making and tunnel play. We would like to say a big congratulation to Ethan Gibbons and Nate Tingey who have both recently become big brothers to Emma and Leo, both boys are fabulous big brothers!

Cygnets We have been talking about having a healthy lifestyle in the Cygnets room! Amongst other activities, we have been encouraging the Cygnets to prepare their own snack while talking about the health benefits of each food. Cygnets have been particularly interested in peeling and cutting fruit, so we have been talking about oranges containing Vitamin C and bananas containing Potassium! Cygnets have been using chopping boards and knives to cut their own snack! We are also using fruit to talk about mathematical concepts of full, halves and quarters. We have been cutting apples and oranges in halves and quarters! The Cygnets have also spent a lot of time baking and cooking, a favourite was homemade pizza to celebrate our Italian week. As from next week, Zoe McVeigh our Kitchen Assistant, will be introducing cookery classes to the children, these will take place on an alternate Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Swans The Swans children have continued to enjoy their Forest School sessions with Beccy and the team at Roundhay Park. The children spent their first session exploring their surroundings and understanding the ‘Forest School Rules’. All children will have a turn at Forest School by the end of the year. Pyjama Drama Our Pyjama classes have been a real success with our Swans children! Last session, the children pretended to go and climb up some really high mountains. Firstly, they put on their helmets, prepared their food and packed their first aid kits, they played the musical instruments as they climbed the mountain. They found a goat on the way who loved listening to their music, the children take a bow as the goat says ‘Braaaaaaaaaaavo’, next they get lost going the wrong way before they see a huge mountain that they need to climb. When the children arrived, they moved in different ways such as jumping to put up their tents and hammering nails into the ground. Once that was done, the children enjoyed a yummy lunch after all their hard work.
