Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our May Newsletter and as always we would like to give a very warm welcome to all children, parents and new families who joined 22 Street Lane Nursery last month. Spring has sprung here at 22 with the children celebrating and exploring many different things. We’ve had some lovely weather during April, which allowed the children to take part in many different outdoor activities, such as Forest School and visiting Roundhay Park. We also had some fluffy friends join us with 8 new chicks hatching at the nursery, as well as a quartet of lambs who visited Street Lane from a local Farm.

Country of the Month; ITALY

Ciao! This month we will be taking a trip to Italy and learning about all things Italian. We are very lucky to have our student Sole in our Swans room who will be teaching the children some Italian words. The children will be making their own pizzas and exploring different types of pasta. We will be exploring different parts of Italy such as Venice, Rome, Florence and Tuscany! As always we welcome any resources such as photographs, clothing and traditional items and appreciate your continued support

STAFF NEWS; May Newsletter

Meet our new Head Chef; Christopher Milner As a chef, there’s nothing more satisfying that seeing people enjoy a dish you’ve prepared. I’ve spent over a decade in the food industry and I’m incredibly passionate about producing high quality meals, most recently as head chef at a busy West Yorkshire bistro. Before that I was catering manager at the City of Wakefield Golf Club. My focus is always on using the freshest, locally sourced ingredients to create wide-ranging dishes of the highest standard. As both a chef, and a father-of-four, I understand just how important it is for youngsters to enjoy a healthy, balanced diet. I look forward to creating meals that are both nutritious and delicious for the children at 22 Street Lane Nursery.

STAFF PROMOTION; Ducklings Deputy Room Leader We are delighted to announce that Charlotte Johnson has been promoted to ‘Deputy Room Leader’ in our Ducklings room. Since joining 22 Street lane Nursery, Charlotte has worked so hard in the Ducklings room and she has developed such strong relationships with the staff, parents and children. I am sure that you will all agree that Charlotte will be fabulous in a leadership role and she is looking forward to embracing her new role. We wish you the best of luck Charlotte!

Goodbye to David Salter We would like to inform you all that David will be leaving 22 Street Lane Nursery at the end on Wednesday 23 rd May due to travel constraints, travelling from York every day has come with its challenges. The children have enjoyed hundreds of delicious meals which have been cooked by David over the past year and we all wish him well in his next journey.

Royal Wedding Week We will be holding our very own ‘Royal Wedding Week’ week commencing 14th May here at 22SLN. The children will be learning about our Royal Family, Kings, Queens, princes and princesses. We will be looking at where Royals live such as different castles and palaces. On Friday the 18th May we will be celebrating with a ‘Royal Party’, we will be making invitations, crowns and celebrating with a ‘Royal Afternoon tea’. All children who attend on the Friday are welcome to wear their party clothes to celebrate.

Safeguarding Training Day Staff training and development is something that we value the importance of here at 22 Street Lane Nursery. We pride ourselves in holding regular staff training days and refresher sessions so that our staff are up to date with key current themes and trends and understand the importance of safeguarding children within our care. We are pleased to say; all staff attended our annual in house safeguarding training day which was held on Saturday 7th April, the course ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ covered;

• Analysis of case studies and serious case reviews • The importance of Early Help

• The signs and symptoms of abuse • What to do if we have a concern about a child

(We will be closed on the following dates for staff training: Thursday 28th June & Wednesday 24th October)

Individual Photographs On Tuesday 15th May, Charles from Arts Photography will be coming in to take individual photographs of the children. If your child does not attend on the Tuesday and you would like your child to have their photograph taken you will be able to bring them in the morning.

Please see Kate at reception so that we can allocate you a 5-minute time slot. Please note, we will be extremely busy so can you please ensure that you arrive in time as you may miss your slot. Thank you.

Fundraising for a new playground at Roundhay Park Laura Webb, Monty and Esther’s mummy is a part of a volunteer group who are also members of ‘friends of Roundhay Park’ charity who are trying to raise £100,000 for a new playground to be set up by the lake in Roundhay Park. Bank Holiday Closures in May Please note that the nursery will be fully closed on Monday 7th May for the May Day Bank Holiday, and on Monday 28th May for the Spring Bank Holiday. Please see out Upcoming Events calendar on Page 16 for more information on nursery closures and events in the next two months.

Save The Date: Swans Graduation 2018 This year we will be holding our Swans Graduation a little earlier than usual on Friday 13th July at 3pm. We have many children going on holidays over the summer, so we thought it would be nice to hold it a little earlier so that children and families do not miss out. The graduation will be held for the children which will be leaving us to start school in September 2018. Please note that due to space, we will only be able to permit 2 adults per child.

School Readiness; If you haven’t already done so, please can you inform Beccy or Clare which school your child is going to so that we can make links with their new schools.

We love emailing our parents and carers, sharing all the amazing things your child(ren) achieves whilst in our care; we have found our newsletters have been an invaluable way of conveying useful and interesting information and we hope you will want to continue to receive our communications. We would like to ask all parents and carers to complete the short survey below and tick the relevant boxes to confirm that you have read and understood the above statement and gives us consent to contact you regarding relevant matters. You may have heard of a new data protection directive called GDPR, this stands for General Data Protection Regulation and replaces the previous Data Protection Directive that the UK Government has in place, the new directive was approved by the EU Parliament in 2016 and comes into effect on 25th May 2018. We sent all parents a separate email about this change a few weeks ago and would like to thank all the parents who submitted their responses. Happy Chicks and new guests at the Nursery The children were so excited when we received a delivery of eggs from the Happy Chick Company. The children waited in anticipation until finally 8 eggs hatched! The children have been so caring and helpful giving the chicks fresh water and food everyday and ensuring that that they have nice clean bedding to sleep in. The Swans children made a large ‘pen’ using wooden blocks so that the chicks could move around on our carpet! We also picked them up very gently and gave them lots of cuddles.

Farmer Alastair and his little lambs visit 22 Street Lane We would like to say a big thank you to our local Farmer, Mr Alastair Trickett for bringing his four lambs in for the children to tie in with our ‘Life Cycles’ topic. The children were lucky enough to visit the lambs in their pen and feed them. After the visit, the children looked at the life cycle of a lamb to a sheep and made a small world using different materials to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world.

Chicklets The Chicklets have been making most of the sunshine and have been on lots of summer walks to Roundhay Park. The Chicklets enjoyed feeding the birds at the lake and watching all the dogs go by. The Chicklets will continue to enjoy lots more walks over the summer months and explore the outdoor garden. We would like to say goodbye to Oliver Hill, Oliver Howson and Khadija who are ready for their next journey at 22 Street Lane Nursery in the Ducklings room.

Ducklings The Ducklings have been searching for minibeasts and have been noticing different creatures in the environment. The children have used a variety of tools to dig in the mud and sand to search for them. They then used magnifying glasses to investigate them closely. The hunt for mini beast certainly did not stop inside, they continued to be found in the Ducklings room! The children then enjoyed listening to the story ‘Mad about Mini Beasts’; they even began to say the names of each mini beast such, including the more challenging ones such as ‘centipede’. Well done Ducklings! The Ducklings would like to say goodbye to Harrison, Rajan and Albie who will be moving the to the Goslings room.

Goslings; The Goslings children have been enjoying exploring the outdoors and lots of messy play activities such as pasta, rice, shaving foam, paint, bubbles, corn flour and slime! The children have used lots of tools to mark make in the messy play such as using car wheels, spoons, brushes, fingers, sticks and heuristic materials. This is has supported the children’s fine and gross motor skills in preparation for writing in fun way which the children have really engaged in! Laura Green is having an operation on her foot so will be unable to work for up to 6 weeks. If Laura is your child’s key person, you will be advised which member of staff will be taking over her role in her absence. We wish you a speedy recovery Laura! The Goslings would also like to say goodbye to Monty, Aanya, Eva and Alex who will be moving into our Cygnets room, its been a pleasure seeing your progression.

Cygnets; The Cygnet children have been learning about the lifecycle of a butterflies. The children have focused on the story of the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar to learn about the different stages of a Caterpillars life. We have used puppets to re tell the story and the children have been able to put them in order from egg to butterfly! We have also had a delivery of some real-life caterpillars which we will be nurturing until they turn in to butterflies. Well done Cygnets! The Cygnets will be saying goodbye to Shreeya and Kaiyan who are ready for their next stage in the Swans room.

Swans The Swans children have had lots of fun at Forest School over the last few weeks. They have climbed trees, hunted for mini beasts, made dens and explored nature. The last session involved ‘Magnificent Mud Art’ where the children explored mud and made faces on tree barks. The children added water to the mud, so it was nice and squishy then they stuck it to the tree bark in the shape of a head. The children then found different materials to make features such as pinecones, leaves, sticks and

stones. There some magnificent creations. Well done Swans!! Our Forest School sessions are in 6-week block sessions. All children will have a turn.

Recipe of the Month

Chicken, Cheese and Tomato Pizza Quiches;

Ingredients • 250g Chicken • 2 large tortilla wraps • 4 eggs • Chopped vegetables (optional)

• 3 cherry tomatoes, halved, plus extra to serve • Handful basil leaves • 5 Sweet potatoes

Method; 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. 2. Place the sweet potato in the oven to bake 3. Using a 12cm cutter (or a small plate) cut circles from the large tortilla wraps – you should get 6. Use the circles to line 6 holes of a muffin tin, pushing them into the holes to make cases. 4. Beat the eggs and chicken together and pour into the tortilla cases 5. Top each case 1/2 a cherry tomato. Bake for 20 mins until the egg has set. 6. Top with a few basil leaves, serve with tomato salsa Perfect for a picnic with a dose of sunshine!

*ATTENTION* Important Information - Please Read

Wipes; Please note that although we provide nappies as part of our offering, wipes are not included in this. It has been noted that lots of children are coming to nursery without nappy wipes. Can we kindly remind parents to ensure that there is always a supply available for your child? Your child’s key person will remind you when they are running low. Moving forwards, we will be charging £15.00 per month to any parents that fails to bring wipes. Nappy Cream; Please note that all Nappy cream (prescribed or no prescribed must be signed in to your child’s Key Person who will sign this in on a ‘Nappy Cream Administration form’. Practitioners will record each time cream is applied and parents must sign at the end of each day. Car Park; As you aware, there are double yellow lines outside the nursery which have been put there for the safety of the children. Please can we ask parents not to park on them. Please could parents also be mindful that they are not parking over more than one space in the car park, as you can appreciate we have very limited parking and the car park can become very busy. Sun Cream and Sun Hats; With the hope that we have some more sunshine on the way, could we please ask all parents that they have a sun hat and sun cream for nursery. Could we ask that all sun cream is factor 50 and that it is clearly labelled with your child’s name and the date that you purchased it. High Temperatures & Fevers; Please can we remind parents that children can not attend nursery if they have a high temperature (over 38 degrees). If a child develops a temperature, then the parents will be called to collect the child which is supported by our policies and procedures. We can administer non – prescribed Calpol for a temperature however we must have written permission.

Absence; P lease note that we are unable to swap days or offer an alternative day if your child is absent from nursery. We are now extremely busy and it is impossible for us to do this for all children. This is stated in our terms and conditions. Thank you for your cooperation. Parents Suggestions; We continue to welcome all feedback from parents, if you would like to make a suggestion then please post this in our ‘Parents Suggestion Box’ which is based on reception. Alternatively, you can speak to a member of staff. Drop Off and Collection; Can we kindly remind you that we open at 7.30 a.m. and cannot accept children into the nursery before this time. We close at 6.00 p.m. and any parents that pick up after this time will be charged. Thank you for your cooperation. Glass Door; For safety of the building, please can you ensure that when you are entering and leaving the building that you close the glass door behind you. Thank you. Labels in Clothing; To avoid items being lost, please can you ensure that your child’s uniform is clearly labelled including their coats, hats, scarves and wellies. If you’re child brings gloves to nursery we strongly advise for these to be attached and threaded through their coat to avoid any gloves going missing . Contacting the Nursery; Please can we kindly ask parents to try and only call the nursery rooms if necessary. It can be very difficult for the staff to keep on coming to the phones when they are trying to look after the children and taking their lunch breaks. Please note if we have every have a concern we would always call so please be assured that they are having a good day unless we call you. Thank you for your understanding.
