August Newsletter Yorkshire Aid Convoy: Friday 9th - Friday 16th August
22 Street Lane Nursery, in partnership with the Yorkshire Aid Convoy, needs your help to provide aid to the children of Ukraine. On Friday 9th August, our CEO Simon Pollard will be joining a convoy of 7.5 tonne lorries to drive roughly 5,000 km on a round trip to help distribute vital aid to those displaced by the war in Ukraine. This humanitarian aid will be delivered to the children of Ukraine by a team of volunteers, with a focus on helping orphanages and hospitals that provide life-saving service to young children in the region. Determined to make a difference, we are looking for your help. We are aiming to raise as much money as possible to help support Yorkshire Aid, which has an unwavering mission of collecting, transporting and distributing humanitarian aid directly to the people and children who need it most. Simon will be on the ground during this operation and driving a lorry full of supplies as a part of a larger convoy effort. Once they have arrived, Yorkshire Aid will then work closely with local organisations and charities on the ground in Ukraine to ensure that all donations reach the most appropriate hospitals and schools that are most in need of help and resources. These convoys take place regularly and are funded by the money raised during previous efforts, so we are initiating this campaign now to help Yorkshire Aid continue their vital work in the future, as they look to deliver more aid in the weeks and months ahead. We believe that as a nursery we have a social responsibility to educate the children about Ukraine in an appropriate manner. As part of an ongoing education programme, the children at 22 Street Lane Nursery will be looking to learn and understand the importance of working together to overcome adversity, as well as the strength of community when people work together to help one another. Every donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated and will be matched by the nursery up to our initial goal. If you are unable to give, we would be incredibly grateful if you are able to share the campaign to friends and family, either directly or through social media, and help get this message out there to allow us to support this mission as much as we can. The Yorkshire Aid charity is a non-profit organisation, and 100% of the funds raised will directly support their future relief efforts. We hope that our involvement will help our children gain an understanding of giving back and helping the less fortunate in circumstances outside of their control. We’re planning to connect with the schools receiving this aid in Ukraine and create ‘pen pal’ links with the children and teachers. We believe that it is important for the children at 22 Street Lane to connect with other children directly and share their experiences to gain a better understanding of the world and other cultures, which will be explored more during class time.
How can YOU help support this incredible event? The nursery has set up a JustGiving page to collect monetary donations until August 31st, at which point the funds will be donated directly to the Yorkshire Aid charity to help their future convoys deliver further aid for children displaced by the war in Ukraine. Our goal is to raise £5,000 by the end of the month, to represent the 5,000 km trip that Simon will be driving personally on this upcoming convoy. In addition to this, he has also committed to matching that initial goal and adding an extra £5,000 to that donation tally, meaning we’re aiming to donate a total of £10,000 to those less fortunate. We’re also kindly asking for everyone to please share the link and help support our efforts in raising as much as possible. If you would like to support us with a donation, please click the following link: https://www.justgiving.com/page/22sln-yorkshire-aid-convoy-supporting-ukraine

Chicklets Room News
What a great month it has been! The Chicklets have been super busy exploring everywhere this month, we even took a trip to the park gardens. Avoiding the drizzly days, the Chicklets have spent lots of time outdoors, finding natural treasures like leaves and bugs. Some of the children were brave enough to hold the creepy crawlies too. We then had some great costumes for Pirates and Princesses Week too. It’s Yorkshire Day on 1st August, so we’ve been preparing lots of activities to celebrate. We will be sending home crafts and pictures full of blue and white to show our support for Yorkshire. We will also be creating some tasty Yorkshire Tea-inspired tuff trays to really get into the spirit! Over the coming month, we will also begin preparing the children for the move to the next room. We will work closely with the Goslings Room to start forming bonds with the children’s new key workers and start our ‘settling in’ sessions (a post about these will be sent out over the next couple of weeks). We will continue to share lots of stories with the Chicklets to help build their vocabulary ready for the transition too.

Ducklings Room News
As always we have enjoyed our baking sessions, but this month we had a special teacher - our chef ‘Oli’. We made delicious vegan flapjack, and the Ducklings enjoyed showing Oli their cooking skills and how they all use their fine motor skills to mix all the ingredients together. We also discussed what ingredients we used, and helped Oli spoon the mixture into the baking tin. The Ducklings have also loved our new addition to the nursery, a piano. The Ducklings were so patient and waited for their turn on the piano with their friends, they enjoyed pressing the different keys and seeing what sounds they made. We played the piano and sang some of our favourite nursery rhymes, which was so much fun! This month we also had a special trip to Tropical World. We stopped for a quick look around the flower gardens for some snack first, before heading to see lots of different animals. Our favourite was the meerkats as they ran super-fast and played peek-a-boo too. We also loved looking at all the different fish and monkeys and practising our best animal noises. The Ducklings loved getting up close to the different enclosures to see the different animals. Some of the Ducklings have been on some lovely beach holidays throughout July, so following on from this we set up a beach tuff tray for them to explore. All the Ducklings enjoyed feeling the water and sand between their toes, and are looking forward to more sensory activities next month!

Goslings Room News
We have had a wonderful July in the Goslings Room. We started off the month with a trip to our local park. The children always enjoy time out in the community, whether this be for a trip to a shop, the library or to run around and let off some steam on a field of grass! Whilst there we enjoyed a bit of bird spotting, counting ducks and smelling all the beautiful flowers. The Goslings children just love being outside, they like to spend their days exploring the nursery grounds, running around the big garden and having games of football which was perfect for our Euros Week which we celebrated during July. We spent a lot of time playing games of football and the children liked telling us all about how their daddies had been shouting at the TV! We have also enjoyed a spot of baking this month. The Goslings children love to role play in the home corner, they enjoy getting their babies in highchairs, sitting their friends around the table and cooking them a feast to enjoy. What better way to extend this interest than to give the children real ingredients to mix? We created vegan banana bread at the start of the month and recently made banana and oat biscuits, can you tell what our favourite fruit is? Throughout the month of August, we will be hoping for some more sunshine to get and explore our community more. We will be supporting our Goslings children as they begin their settling sessions in the Cygnets Room. We will also be celebrating how amazing it is to be from Yorkshire on Yorkshire Day and looking into different cultures as we celebrate Carnival Week!

Throughout July, the Cygnets have been busy celebrating the Euros and enjoyed plenty of activities related to football. The Cygnets enjoyed designing their own football training vests and football bunting, and they also made a huge football using recycled materials. We also had a few football matches in the car park where the Cygnets showed us their competitive sides! Towards the end of July, we then celebrated our Pirates and Princesses Week. All the Cygnets really enjoyed showing us their amazing costumes. They then made their own treasure map using tea bags to stain the paper and made their own pirate ship, magic wands and castle with a wide range of materials. We also had a treasure hunt in our big garden and in Roundhay Park. The Cygnets enjoyed making their own map of the big garden and went for a hunt by themselves too. August is coming and that means it’s our last month in Cygnets together. We are looking forward to making more memories before your children transition to the preschool room!

Throughout July we have loved showing our support towards the Euros and Wimbledon! The children enjoyed making their own footballs, tennis rackets and England flags in the creative area using a wide range of materials. Whilst in the garden the children had so much fun joining in with football sessions, where Felix started off with a little warm-up up then worked on dribbling and passing skills. The Swans also enjoyed taking part in our very own Sports Day. The children enjoyed the egg and spoon race as well as a fast-running race and the beanbag race. All the Swans children sat at the side of the track cheering for their friends, and the children were awarded medals for their place in each race. Towards the end of the month, the children loved celebrating Pirates and Princesses Week at the nursery. They came dressed up, excited to show off their outfits to their friends. We went on a big treasure hunt in the big garden to see who could find the most gold treasure! We had an amazing day at our Swans 2024 Graduation! The children have been working so hard to learn their songs throughout the month and did a fantastic job at performing these to their loved ones. The grownups also joined in with some singing and dancing. Thankfully we had some lovely weather, so we all got to enjoy a lovely BBQ outside to celebrate all the children’s preschool achievements. Throughout August we will be saying our goodbyes to the Swans children as they are moving onto their next big adventure to big school. We wish them all the best of luck!
