June Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to the June Newsletter, and as always, a warm greeting to the new families who have joined us recently. We have had another busy month at the nursery, learning all about Spain, which has been our Country of the Month. We celebrated World Bee Day and focused on Mental Health Awareness Week and National Walking Month, where we spent lots of time out in the community! Later in the month, we welcomed all our lovely Grandparents for our Stay and Play events and celebrated Eid al-Adha. We also enjoyed a visit from the mobile farm where we met lots of animals such as goats, guinea pigs, alpacas, pigs and rabbits. Throughout June, we will be celebrating National Children’s Gardening Week, Bicycle Day, National Picnic Week, Healthy Eating Week and Great Big Green Week, making lots of healthy treats, learning all about which foods are good for our bodies and give us lots of energy, and thinking of ways we can help look after our planet. We will also be hosting our Father’s Day events, which we are looking forward to. To find out more, please read on...

June Newsletter STAFF NEWS

Welcome Ebony! A warm welcome to Ebony, who has recently joined our team as part of our Bank Staff. Ebony has already begun spending time across the nursery, getting to know the children and staff, and we are delighted to have her with us. “Working with children is incredibly rewarding, from watching them grow as babies to seeing them leave for big school full of confidence and independence. I have a real passion for supporting children with SEND and find it especially meaningful to see the positive difference that care, patience, and understanding can make in a child’s life and development.”

Welcome Pheobe! A warm welcome to Pheobe, who has joined our Ducklings Room as an Apprentice Practitioner. Pheobe has already started working closely with all the Ducklings’ children and is enjoying getting to know everyone. “I am excited to begin my journey here at 22 Street Lane Nursery and develop new skills and knowledge with children. I am currently studying my Level 3 Apprenticeship here at the Nursery, and I am excited for my future working in childcare!”

June Newsletter NEWS

Country of the Month, June 2026: Greece Throughout May, we learnt all about Spain, and the children enjoyed creating their own interpretations of the Spanish flag, sampling some of the local cuisine and having a go at Flamenco dancing! The children also learnt how to say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ in Spanish, and our older children even practised counting to 10. Throughout June 2026, we will be exploring Greece as our Country of the Month. We will be looking at pictures of beautiful beaches and bright blue seas, creating simple Greek flags, and even having a go at Greek dancing and music. Did you know? In Greece, people often say “opa!” when they are dancing and having fun! If any parents have any resources that could support our Country of the Month, we would be most grateful.

National Share A Story Month: W/C 18th May For ‘National Share A Story Month’ in May, we invited all the children to bring their favourite books to the nursery. We also focused on one of our core books each day that week, helping the children to develop their vocabulary and understanding skills. It was so lovely to see everyone sharing their books and talking about their favourite characters!

June Newsletter NEWS

Mental Health Awareness Week: W/C 11th May To support Mental Health Awareness Week, the children took part in lots of activities linked to feelings and emotions, including exploring a range of stories, some yoga sessions, and having a spa and relaxation day. As the theme this year was ‘taking action’, the children also enjoyed lots of walks and thinking of small actions they could do to help others feel hopeful and happy!

June Newsletter NEWS

Petting Farm Visit: Tuesday 5th May The children had such a fantastic day seeing all of the animals at the nursery. They were able to pet and feed the animals, including goats, sheep, an alpaca and many more!

Grandparents Stay and Play Sessions: W/C 18th May Thank you to all of our Grandparents who attended our Stay and Play sessions. We hope that you all had as much fun as we did!

June Newsletter NEWS

World Bee Day Celebrations: Wednesday 20th May! In support of ‘World Bee Day’, the children learnt all about why Bees are so important and how we can take care of bees to encourage biodiversity. Chef Oli also made a delicious honey loaf for everyone to enjoy! Did you know? • As well as honey, royal jelly, and pollen, bees provide products used in healthcare. • A third of the entire world’s food production depends on bees. • Bees are a good indicator of warmer weather, and it’s common to spot bees buzzing around beautiful flowers during the summer months. Bees play an important role in pollinating trees and flowers, helping to provide habitats for wildlife. They also pollinate the food we need to survive.

National Walking Month: W/C 4th May To mark National Walking Month, the children enjoyed lots of walks around the local community, whilst also focusing on activities to help develop their physical skills!

Eid al-Adha: Wednesday 27th May To mark Eid al-Adha on Wednesday 27th May, the children took part in a range of age-appropriate activities to help them learn about this important festival. Through stories, role play, creative crafts, and discussion, they explored key themes such as kindness, generosity, and caring for others.

June Newsletter NEWS

National Children’s Gardening Week: W/C Monday 1st June To celebrate National Children’s Gardening Week, the children will enjoy taking part in a variety of gardening activities and learning all about the importance of plants in our ecosystem. They will help to plant more flowers and herbs in our Nursery Allotment, care for the plants as they grow, and explore how plants support wildlife and the environment. The children will also enjoy trips to Roundhay Park, where they will have opportunities to observe nature, explore the outdoors, and talk about the different plants, trees, and insects they discover.

Healthy Eating Week and Great Big Green Week: W/C Monday 8th June We will be supporting ‘Healthy Eating Week’ from 8th-12th June, where we will be teaching the children about what foods keep us healthy and what foods we should not eat too much of. Each of the rooms will be making their own healthy snacks and will have a chance to visit the nursery allotment to see where our food comes from! The Great Big Green Week is during the same week and is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. The children will therefore be learning all about how we can protect our planet, going on lots of walks in the local community, collecting litter and learning about saving our oceans. The Cygnets and Swans will also be doing some junk modelling using recycled materials, focusing on the importance of recycling and reusing items.

June Newsletter NEWS

World Bicycle Day: W/C 8th June Linked to Healthy Eating Week, we will also be discussing exercise and ways to move our bodies. We would therefore like to invite the children to bring their bikes or scooters on the above dates, to take part in some races in the car park area. • Goslings Room: Monday 8th June • Cygnets Room: Tuesday 9th June • Swans Room: Wednesday 10th June More information will follow in a separate Tapestry post.

National Picnic Week: W/C Monday 15th June National Picnic Week is a dedicated week that encourages people to venture outside, savour delectable meals, and relish the beauty of nature. It serves as a reminder to take a break from the daily hustle and bustle and enjoy quality time with family, friends, or even in solitude. Picnicking allows individuals to appreciate the simple joys of food, nature, and connection with others. In order to celebrate, we will be planning lots of picnics and themed activities throughout the week. If you go on any picnics with family or friends, we would love to see some photos!

Chicklets Room News

The babies have had a wonderful start to the month of May, filled with lots of exciting activities, new experiences, and happy moments shared together. We have been enjoying the brighter weather and spending more time exploring and playing with our friends. One of the highlights of the month was a very special visit from the farm, where we had the chance to meet a variety of different farm animals. The babies were full of excitement and curiosity as they watched the animals closely and listened to the different sounds they made. Many of the babies enjoyed getting up close to the animals, gently petting and stroking them with support from the staff. The Chicklets have been very excited to begin their new baking class, Star Bakers! The children have loved getting involved in a variety of baking activities, using their fine motor skills to mix, pour, stir, and decorate. So far, they have enjoyed making delicious treats such as banana bread, flapjacks, and loaf cakes. The baking sessions have been a fantastic way for the children to build confidence, follow instructions, and work together while having lots of fun creating tasty goodies to enjoy. Our new theme, Little Nature Explorers, has been a wonderful adventure for the Chicklets! Every Monday, the children have enjoyed taking part in nature explorer activities and, at times, exciting trips to Roundhay Park, where they have been exploring the outdoors and searching for lots of different nature treasures. From spotting flowers and leaves to looking for bugs, sticks, and birds, the children have loved discovering the natural world around them.

Ducklings Room News

What a wonderful start to the month we have had! We were so excited to welcome the mobile farm to the nursery, and the Ducklings absolutely loved stroking and feeding the animals. Their favourites were the rabbits, guinea pigs, baby lambs and the cow. We enjoyed singing “Old MacDonald” together and copying the animal noises as we explored. In the Ducklings Room, the children take part in special classes each week. On Mondays, our “Little Nature Explorers” sessions encourage the children to enjoy mini-beast hunts, collect natural treasures, and explore the garden with curiosity. Thursdays are our “Mini Bakers” sessions, where the children have made themed treats, including Spanish flag biscuits, green heart biscuits for Mental Health Awareness Week, and gingerbread men for Share a Story Month. On Fridays, the children enjoy “Calm and Curious” sessions using parachutes, sensory toys, and calming music to support relaxation and self-regulation. During Mental Health Awareness Week, the Ducklings explored feelings through emotion activities, creative play-dough experiences, and even enjoyed a relaxing spa afternoon with cucumber slices and afternoon tea. For Share a Story Month, the children loved listening to stories such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Gruffalo, The Gingerbread Man, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? We also launched our new staff-led sessions: Little Nature Explorers made bird feeders, Little Bakers whipped up delicious banana flapjacks, and our Calm and Curious sessions gave the children a chance to practice relaxing yoga breathing techniques. We also marked World Bee Day, created moon and star pictures for Eid al-Adha, and thoroughly enjoyed welcoming our lovely grandparents for a wonderful Stay and Play afternoon of stories and fruit buns. Finally, we made the most of the glorious sunshine by making fruit ice lollies, enjoying water play, and even helping to wash a staff member’s car! We are looking forward to June, when we will be diving into Gardening Week, Great Big Green Week, Father’s Day, National Picnic Week, and a fun Beach Party Week!

The children thoroughly enjoyed a visit from the mobile farm. They loved meeting and learning about the different animals, and many grew their confidence around the animals by gently stroking and brushing them. It was wonderful to see their excitement and curiosity throughout the experience. During Mental Health Awareness Week, we focused on our wellbeing and learning to enjoy the world around us. The children went on a variety of walks, where they explored and enjoyed spending time together outdoors. And we enjoyed our relaxing Spa Day too, where we felt nice and calm after our flowery foot baths, getting our nails painted and having cucumber face masks! We also joined in with yoga sessions together to continue feeling very zen For our May home learning challenge, the children planted sunflower seeds in their plant pots, ready to take them home. We have been talking about how we need to look after our plants to help them grow. We are so excited to watch the sunflowers change over time. Thank you to everyone taking part at home. We cannot wait to hear how your flowers are growing! Another exciting addition to our room this month has been our caterpillars. The children have been carefully observing them each day and learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. We are now eagerly waiting for them to form cocoons before they eventually transform into butterflies.

During May, we had a very special visit from the mobile farm, which all the children thoroughly enjoyed! There was a wide range of farm animals for the children to feed and pet, and some of the children even helped to brush the ponies. At the end of May, we also celebrated Eid al-Adha. The children enjoyed learning about Eid through stories and by creating crafts in the creative area. The children in Swans have continued their Science Tots sessions throughout May, focusing on the topic of light and reflection. During one session, our teacher Bev explained how white light can be split into different colours and demonstrated rainbow colours in bubbles, as well as how coloured filters can be used to change light. The children then created their very own superhero masks! Throughout June, the children in Swans will be focusing on school readiness. We will be taking a closer look at the schools the children will be attending, including their uniforms, what the buildings look like, and which friends will be joining them. We will also be reading lots of books about starting school, alongside a range of exciting activities for the children to explore. We also have our special end-of-year trip to Stockeld Park to look forward to in June! In addition, we will begin preparing for our Swans Graduation. The children will be learning songs that they will perform for their families during the celebration.
