September Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our September Newsletter, and as always, a warm welcome to the new families who have recently joined us. Each month, we send a Newsletter to all of our families to share with them news and events which have happened or are happening throughout the nursery. We hope that you find this Newsletter useful and informative. August has been a fun filled month for the children here at 22SLN which started with Eid-ul- Adha, when the children celebrated learning about some of the traditions and customs carried out during the festival and created their own Eid paintings. The children have been exploring Jamaica as our Country of the Month and celebrating local carnivals. We dressed in our brightest clothes and made carnival crowns and masks; we did lots of dancing to Jamaican music followed by a BBQ dinner of Jerk chicken, rice ‘n peas. Yum! September is a busy month here at 22 as we have lots of new little Chicklets and Ducklings joining us as well as children transitioning to their new rooms. To find out more please read on…

Dana Hawkes Joins The Cygnets Room Welcome to Dana who has recently relocated from Nottingham and has joined our Cygnets room as a Qualified Practitioner. Dana has a wealth of experience working in nurseries and holiday clubs and has recently contributed to being awarded an Ofsted Outstanding judgement. “Working and caring for children to me, is not only a career but a dream. Throughout my seven years of working with children I have found nothing more rewarding than being able to see an impact and the difference a good educator can make on a child’s life and development. I am super enthusiastic about creating a fun, enjoyable and stable educational setting for every child.

I love finding new and fun ways to incorporate different methods to teach and expand a child’s mind through their own common interests, and strongly believe that there are huge benefits of using the outdoors as a tool to initiate this. In my spare time I love spending time outdoors as well as spending quality time with my friends and family! I am extremely grateful and looking forward to joining the amazing team at 22 Street Lane Nursery.”

NEWS

Pirate Week The nursery set sail on our Pirate Week and had grrrr-eat fun participating in lots of pirate themed activities! We designed treasure maps, making sure that X marked the spot, then dug for treasure in the sand sensory tray, resulting in finding some golden treasure coins which we counted out! We got creative and made our very own pirate hats and went on a terrific treasure hunt in the big garden…we followed all the clues and found the special golden treasure! We had an arr-mazing week!

Jamaica / Carnival Week We’ve really enjoyed celebrating our Country of the Month, Jamaica, hosting our own 22 Street Lane Carnival! The children have loved exploring the colourful and vibrant costumes used at carnival, and even made some carnival masks using feathers and paint, pairing these with some brilliantly crafted carnival crowns to wear whilst we danced away to some reggae nursery rhymes! The Swan’s children were very creative when making the Jamaican flag using fruit, independently cutting up each fruit that was needed. Mango was used for the yellow, green apples and pear for the green and blueberries for the black colours, we then arranged them carefully into the perfect flag design which was shortly followed by eating the fruit as a snack! The children helped to make an upside-down pineapple cake to take home at the end of the week to finish the celebrations.

Paw on Heart - Dog Therapy Visit

We were very lucky to have received a visit from Paw on Heart, with Jennie and her lovely dog Millie! The Children listened carefully as Jennie spoke to the children about safety when saying “hello” and stroking a dog. Jennie showed the children a range of pictures of dogs and asked if they could spot differences and similarities between them! It was then time to learn how dogs feel and how we feel in different situations. Jennie asked, ‘Would you like someone to pat you on the head whilst you were having dinner?’, and the children giggled saying ‘No!’, which led onto her explanation that dogs wouldn’t like it either, helping the children to develop boundaries and respect when around animals. She also taught us what to do if we don’t want to say hello, standing up ‘tall like a tree’ spreading their ‘branches’ (arms) and closing their ‘twigs’ (fingers), then crossing their arms and looking down to the ‘roots’ (feet), letting the dog know not to say “hello”! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting Jennie and Millie, some children even gave Millie a little stroke before she left, and all washing their hands carefully before tea!

Makaton Sign Language

As part of our team training day, we learned the basic signs of Makaton and how these can support the children in our setting. What is Makaton? Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Who is Makaton for? Makaton is the UK's leading language programme for adults and children with learning or communication difficulties. It is also used by everyone who shares their lives, for example, parents and other family members, friends and carers, and education and health professionals. Makaton is used for teaching communication, language and literacy skills with children and adults who are at an early stage of communication and language development. This structured approach can also help people who are learning English as an additional language, helping them to communicate straightaway, whilst also supporting their learning. We will be teaching Makaton to the children at nursery and would like to share a sign with you every month!

Dish of the Month

Italian Spaghetti and Meatballs See our past selections on: 22streetlanenursery.co.uk/dish-of-the-month/

Ingredients

For the pasta sauce • 3 tbsp olive oil • 4 garlic cloves, crushed • 4 x 400g cans chopped tomato • 125ml red wine (optional) • 3 tbsp caster sugar • ½ a large bunch flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped • A few basil leaves (optional)

For the spaghetti and meatballs • 8 good-quality pork sausages • 1kg beef mince • 1 onion, finely chopped • ½ a large bunch flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped • 85g parmesan, grated, plus extra to serve • 100g fresh breadcrumbs • 2 eggs, beaten with a fork • Olive oil, for roasting • Spaghetti, to serve (about 100g per portion)

Method 1. First make the meatballs. Split the skins of 8 good-quality pork sausages and squeeze out the meat into your largest mixing bowl. 2. Add 1kg beef mince, 1 finely chopped onion, ½ large bunch flat-leaf parsley, 85g grated parmesan, 100g fresh breadcrumbs, 2 beaten eggs and lots of seasoning. Get your hands in and mix together really well – the more you squeeze and mash the mince, the more tender the meatballs will be. 3. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. 4. Roll the mince mixture into about 50 golf ball sized meatballs. Set aside any meatballs for freezing, allowing about 5 per portion, then spread the rest out in a large roasting tin – the meatballs will brown better if spaced out a bit. 5. Drizzle with a little oil (about 1 tsp per portion), shake to coat, then roast for 20-30 mins until browned. 6. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Heat 3 tbsp olive oil in your largest pan. Add 4 crushed garlic cloves and sizzle for 1 min. 7. Stir in four 400g cans chopped tomatoes, 125ml red wine, if using, 3 tbsp caster sugar, ½ a large bunch flat-leaf parsley and seasoning. Simmer for 15-20 mins until slightly thickened. 8. Stir in a few basil leaves, if using, spoon out any portions for freezing, then add the cooked meatballs to the pan to keep warm while you boil the spaghetti (you'll need about 100g per portion).

September Newsletter Chicklets Room News The Chicklets have been very busy this month!

Our eldest Chicklets have been preparing to move rooms throughout August and have been enjoying visiting the Goslings room every week for a play to get to know their new key person. All of the Chicklets have done really well on their settles and have enjoyed exploring the new environment whilst having access to outdoors all day. We are very sad to see all our lovely Chicklets fly the nest but know they will all do amazingly in the Goslings. We have been busy celebrating different occasions in the Chicklets this month such as Eid, Pirate Week and Carnival. We have been exploring lots of messy play activities such as glueing and sticking to make stars and moons pictures, we have also been painting carnival masks and sticking feathers to these. One of their favourite messy play activities this month has been exploring different coloured play dough and using the different mark making tools. The Chicklets have all shown an interest in the story ‘Dear Zoo’ this month. To support this interest, we have been setting up a large-scale Dear Zoo sensory area for the babies to explore and spot the animals from the book. We have also enjoyed reading the book together as a group and making the different animal sounds with the puppets! We look forward to welcoming our new families throughout September!

Ducklings Room News

The Ducklings have had a busy August starting with Eid-ul-Adha celebrations! The Ducklings made their own moon and stars pictures by sticking blue and yellow tissue paper developing their fine motor skills. We explored coloured rice and looked on Tapestry to see the celebrations our friends shared. The Ducklings interest in mini beasts has continued to grow, we have been exploring brown mini-beasts and going on mini-beast hunts in the sand and water trays, using our transporting schemas to catch them with our buckets and then emptying into the water to re-find! We have also been searching high and low in the garden using our magnifying glasses to search for mini-beasts, we hope you enjoyed your home-learning checklists to see if there was any hiding in your garden at home, please share your findings on Tapestry! The Ducklings have also been celebrating Pirate Week! We made our own treasure chest where we all had to find the treasure inside, but before that we had to walk the plank to get to the treasure pot! Once we had all walked the plank and been so courageous, we then read the ‘Ten Little Pirates’ story’ with our friends! We would like to give a warm welcome to all the new children and families who are joining us throughout September. We look forward to getting to know you and your little ones.

Goslings Room News

This month in Goslings we have welcomed some more children from the Chicklets room! We are amazed at how quickly they have settled into the room and built bonds with their new Key Person. In just a short period of time being in the room they have also developed their confidence and independence, from being able to wash their hands at the sink and drying them all by themselves, to being able to find their own picture on their cups and placemats at mealtimes! We are also so proud of the older Goslings children who are currently transitioning to the Cygnets room and how well they have been doing during their settle sessions. When back in the Goslings room they have been taking on such a caring role towards the new Goslings. They have been finding toys for them to play with or have been giving them regular cuddles, as well as asking them if they're okay. Throughout August, we have been changing the secret garden into new and exciting things for the children, this is located at the back of the Tipi. At the beginning of the month, we followed the children's interests and transformed the secret garden into a magical dinosaur land, then later for Pirate Week! In the secret garden you could find a pirate ship made from cardboard boxes that had just arrived on a new island! Towards the end the month, the Goslings have enjoyed celebrating our Country of the Month 'Jamaica'. This also included celebrating carnival! The Goslings made some brilliant festival crowns and masks to wear while we all danced away to some reggae nursery rhymes! The children were also very helpful in making some yummy pineapple upside down cake to take home at the end of the week to finish off the celebrations.

Cygnets Room News

The Cygnets have had yet another super busy month, we have been looking at our Country of the Month, Jamaica, through exploring different textures in the tuff tray including rice, we also incorporated maths into the children’s play using numerals and encouraging the children to count as they scooped rice into different sized containers. The children have had access to lots of water play in our tuff tray as we have been supporting the children to strengthen their fine motor skills as we have been emptying and pouring. Many of our Cygnets have had baby siblings arrive this month, we have set up role play activities, so the children have been looking after the baby dolls by washing, dressing and changing them. The Cygnets celebrated Eid-ul-Adha at the beginning of the month, we enjoyed looking at the different clothes that people wear during their celebrations, as well as creating our own ‘henna hands’. The children have been settling in Swans this month before their transition in September, they are all getting on extremely well. We want to wish all our Cygnets the best of luck as they are soon to begin their next adventure at 22SLN in the Swans room, we would also like to thank all the parents for their continuous support throughout your child’s time in the room. On another note we are very excited to welcome all our newbies to the Cygnets room who are also settling extremely well. We are looking forward to getting to know our new Cygnets and their families.

Swans Room News

The Swans have been very busy throughout August and have celebrated a number of exciting times. We started the month with our ‘Pirate Week’, and the children had a fantastic week participating in lots of themed activities. The Swans designed their own treasure maps, with ‘x’ marking the spot for the treasure, also used water and teabags to create an old and authentic effect. We then went into the Big Garden on an exciting treasure hunt as we received a message from Captain Blackbeard that he had left us lots of golden coins! The children were fantastic at following the clues to each area of the garden; eventually uncovering the hidden gold! Then the Swans have also been learning all about Jamaica which was our Country of the Month! We have also celebrated Carnival Week this week, with the children dressing up in lots of bright colours, designing their own carnival masks, making their own Jamaican music using pots and pans, and even exploring a multi coloured rice tray, filling and emptying lots of different containers! As well as this, the Swans have also learnt about Jamaica and even made the Jamaican flag using fruit. The children were able to wash their hands and cut up all the fruit independently. We’ve also been looking at traditional foods and clothes worn in Jamaica, watching lots of videos of Carnival Week in Jamaica. Finally, as always, we have been participating in lots of phonics and maths activities, including threading, practicing writing names, matching objects to numeral cards and may more. The Swans have had a very busy month!

Car Park As you are aware, there are double yellow lines outside the nursery which have been put there for the safety of the children. Please can we ask that parents do not park on them, and also be mindful of parking over more than one space in the car park. As you can appreciate, we have very limited parking, and so the car park can become very busy. High Temperatures & Fevers Please can we remind parents that children cannot attend nursery if they have a high temperature (over 38 ° C). If a child develops a temperature whilst at nursery, parents will be called to collect them, as supported by our policies and procedures. We can administer non- prescribed Calpol for a temperature, although we must first receive permission in writing. HMRC Additional Funding Code (3 & 4 year old - 30 hours) If you are eligible and in receipt of additional 3 & 4 year-old funding, look out for a prompt every three months from HMRC to reconfirm your details so that your eligibility can be re-assessed. If you do not do this, please note that we are unable to claim the funding on your behalf. Sun Cream and Sunhats With the warmer months ahead, please can you ensure that your child has appropriate clothing for warm weather including sun cream and a sun hat. We would recommend that you provide sun cream which is factor 50 and at least a 4-star UVA rating. If you could please label your child’s sun cream and hat with their name it would be helpful. Absence Please note that we are unable to swap days or offer an alternative day if your child is absent from nursery. We are now extremely busy, and it is impossible for us to do this for all children. This is stated in our terms and conditions. Thank you for your cooperation.

If your child brings gloves to nursery, we strongly advise for these to be attached and threaded through their coat to avoid any gloves going missing . Contacting the Nursery Please can we kindly ask parents to try and only call the nursery rooms if necessary. It can be very difficult for the staff to keep coming to the phones when they are trying to look after the children and take appropriate breaks.
