September Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our September newsletter, and as always, a very warm welcome to all the new families who have recently joined us. At the beginning of each month, we send a newsletter to all our families to share details of all the news and events that have taken place, or will take place, throughout the nursery. We hope that you will find our newsletter useful and informative! August has been a very busy month for everyone at 22 Street Lane, with so many settles taking place to prepare the children for the move to their new rooms. The children are all ready for their transitions and we hope they all settle with ease into their new environments. We are looking forward to a busy September as we welcome lots of new little Chicklets, Ducklings and Goslings to the nursery. To find out more, please read on...

September Newsletter NEWS

Country of the Month, September 2023 Throughout August, we have explored Italy as our Country of the Month. In our construction areas, we replicated some of the world's most famous architecture, such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa and The Colosseum. We made bruschetta and pizza, using basil that was grown in our allotment area and different pastas to make pictures and collages. As we have so many new families joining us in September, instead of a country of the month, we will be focusing on getting to know our new children and families including their family backgrounds and what they celebrate.

Yorkshire Day Celebrations The children had lots of fun celebrating Yorkshire Day! We explored the beauties of our county and created the Yorkshire Flag using different, natural materials. We came to the nursery dressed in white, blue and yellow too and had delicious Yorkshire Puddings for lunch.

Sunny Fun at our Beach Party Day! When the sun finally came out, we held our very own 22 Street Lane Beach Party Day. The children came to nursery in the swimwear and took part in many water activities, including playing in our paddling pools and on our water slide. The children had hours of fun in the sun followed by a fish and chip lunch with frozen yoghurt as a dessert, yum!

September Newsletter NEWS

Carnival Week Celebrations In support of Leeds West Indian Carnival, we held our own Carnival Week! The children came to nursery in the bright clothes, and we made some traditional headpieces, which we then used for our carnival disco. We also explored colourful feathers in our messy play tray, where the children used their senses to explore. We finished the celebrations with a traditional Caribbean meal of jerk chicken, rice and peas.

Nursery Closure - Staff Training Day The nursery will be closed on Friday 3rd November for our staff training day. We have two staff training days per year, and we ensure that these are on different days each year. We thank you for your support.

Nursery Uniforms Available We still have some second-hand uniforms available, if you would like any, please speak to a member of the management team.

Dish of the Month

Chicken and Mushroom Risotto

See our past selections on: 22streetlanenursery.co.uk/dish-of-the-month/ Ingredients

• 400g diced chicken breast • 250g mixed wild mushrooms • 250g risotto rice • 1 large white onion • 5g rosemary • 2 garlic cloves • 2 carrots

• 2 vegetable stock cubes mixed with 1 litre of hot water (you may need a little more than this) • 100g mascarpone • 50g grated parmesan • Salt and pepper

Method

1. Finely dice the white onion and garlic then sauté them on low heat in a large pan, making sure it doesn’t burn. Put your stock on to boil with the correct amount of water in a separate pan. Peel and slice your carrots. 2. Add your carrots to the pan and continue to cook with the onions and garlic. Once the vegetables have started to soften, add your diced chicken breast with rosemary and some salt and pepper. 3. Brown your chicken breast, making sure nothing is burning. Wash your rice under cold water making sure you wash all the starch out. Add your rice to the pan and fry for around 1 minute, then carefully add the vegetable stock ladle by ladle until everything is submerged. It will take around 15-30 minutes on a low heat. 4. Once the rice, chicken and vegetables are all cooked take it off the heat carefully and add the mascarpone and grated parmesan. Taste to check the seasoning and enjoy!

Tip: You could use butternut squash instead of carrots, if you prefer.

During the week of 11th September, we will be celebrating the Jewish New Year ‘Rosh Hashanah’. We follow traditions such as dipping apples in honey and trying new fruits. The children will also have the opportunity to taste and make their own Challah bread as well as learn the song "Dip the apples in the honey"!

September Newsletter Chicklets Room Introduction

We would like to welcome you to the Chicklets Room and are really looking forward to getting to know your child. We wanted to introduce you to the room and explain some helpful information.

Staffing: We work on a 1:3 ratio in the Chicklets room and can have up to 11 children in the room each day. We currently have three members of staff in the Chicklets room who you will meet during your child's time here:

Shannon Robinson Room Leader

Amie Mawson Deputy Room Leader

Caitlyn Brown Apprentice Practitioner

Before your child starts, they will be allocated one of these members of the Chicklets Team to be their Key Person. Your child's Key Person will be responsible for ensuring that your child’s emotional and physical needs are met; They will help your child settle into nursery life and they will observe and record their development. You and your child will get to know their Key Person during their settle sessions. In the event that your child’s Key Person is off, then we have a secondary Key Person system in place that will take over the roles of their main Key Person at that time. Although each child has their own Key Person, we encourage staff to bond with all the children.

The Daily Routine we follow in the Chicklets Room is as follows: 8:00-9:00: Breakfast 9:00-10:00: Free flow play / Key Person time / outside play 10:00-10:15: Snack 10:15-11:30: Free flow play / Key Person time / outside play 11:30-12:00: Lunch 12:00-14:00: Free flow play / Key Person time 14:00-14:15: Snack 14:15-15:30: Free flow play / Key Person time / outside play 15:30-16:00: Tea 16:00-18:00: Free Flow play

In the Chicklets Room, the routine fits around the individual needs of each child. The children will sleep at different times depending on their routine at home. This is similar to mealtimes, where some children may only have bottles, others will be eating full meals. For sleep time, we have coracles and sleep mats in the sleep area for the children have their naps. They will have their own labelled bed sheet and blanket, which are cleaned every week and stored in their individual baskets. Pick up and drop off: A member of staff will meet you at the door at the top of the stairs for handover, please gain a member of the Chicklets staff’s attention, by knocking on the window, and they can let us know you are waiting?

September Newsletter Chicklets Room Introduction

Tapestry: Tapestry is a vital tool that is used across the nursery to communicate with you on a day-to-day basis to share your child's development in observations. Your child will have a ‘My Day at Nursery’ post each day that they attend, which will consist of pictures as well as information as to how much they have eaten, nappies, sleep, any bottles they have had and a brief sentence about what they have been doing that day. Your child's Key Person will be responsible for your child's planning and assessments within the room. You will also receive regular 'Wow Moments' (that has been completed by your Key Person) that you are able to read at home. Each 'Wow Moment' will be marked against the EYFS curriculum to monitor your child's progress. Please feel free to post on Tapestry too! You can let us know what your child is enjoying at home or anything fun you have been up to at the weekends / evenings. We can then use this further your child at nursery by basing our activities around their interests. We have produced a step-by-step guide to using Tapestry to help those unsure of how to use Tapestry when it comes to uploading posts such as showing your child's interests, what you have got up to at the weekend or taking part in the home learning challenges. Tapestry is also available to download on your phone or tablet as an app which some parents find an easy way to access. If you have any difficulties accessing Tapestry, feel free to ask myself and anyone in the room. In my bag: We do ask that each child brings in their own bag to be placed on their peg with a few essentials for their day at nursery! Unfortunately, we cannot accept drawstring bags or plastic bags are these are a choking hazard to our little chicklets. Here's a list of a few things your child will need: • Spare clothes (a couple of changes should be enough to warrant messy play and nappy accidents, we do ask that this doesn't include any precious clothing as we like to get messy and wouldn't want anything to get ruined) - Vests / Socks / Trousers / Tops / Dribble bibs / Coats / Jackets / Cardigans / Shoes • Bottles and Formula (if applicable - powder to be pre-weighed out in individual containers) • Wipes (these will be kept in your child’s individual nappy basket) • Nappy cream (this will be kept in your child’s individual nappy basket) • Teething aids (granules / gels / oils / teethers) • Weather appropriate clothing (gloves / hats / scarves / sun hats / suncream / puddle suits / wellies / etc...) • Comforters (teddies / dummies / etc...) We will always try out best to ensure all items are returned safely home. We would highly recommend labelling your child’s things, however, as this helps us to remember which child they belong to! We have lots of chicklets to remember which item belongs to each and sometimes get a little confused so we would hate for anything to get lost. Pictures: Please could you upload a portrait photo of your child to be used on your child’s individual peg. This photo will also be used on our birthday banner and their placemat. Please could we also ask for you to upload some family photos for our ‘My Family’ display, this is a great way to help the Chicklets Room feel more homely and to help your child settle into nursery.

Chico the Chicklet: In the Chicklets Room, we have a room mascot who loves to join you on adventures and take pictures to share with us back at nursery; here’s a little message from him: “Hi everyone! My name is Chico and I am the Chicklets Room mascot! I will be taking turns to visit your homes over the coming weeks to join in on some of your adventures. I can’t wait to see what exciting things we will get up to and record it in my diary! See you soon, Chico ”

Drinks: As the children in Swans self-serve we do not have water bottles in the room. Both inside the classroom and outdoors the children always have access to water and cups for them. However, staff make sure to remind children throughout the day to keep drinking and we make sure that each child has a drink during every meal. Group / Carpet Time: The Swans will have circle time every day at 9.15am-9:30am. During circle time we will cover the days of the week, as well as the month and the year. We will ask what the weather is like and ask the children to count their friends. We will also have a helper of the day to promote independence. During some carpet times, the children will also be invited to take part in phonics or maths based activities. Wellies and waterproof clothing: As the children will in turn be attending Forest school we please ask that you bring in a pair of wellies and waterproofs for your child. These can be kept on our welly rack, or you are welcome to take them home if you prefer. Jolly Phonics: In the Swans Room a slightly larger emphasis will be placed on phonics and we will begin 'Phase 2' (letter sounds) in November when all of the children are settled and used to the new routines. We follow the 'Jolly Phonics' scheme and the children will be encouraged to learn each song which matches each sound of the alphabet. There will also be lots of activities set up daily linking to a letters of the alphabet and lots of mark making activities too! Extra-Curricular Activities: In the Swans Room we will have lots of extra-curricular activities starting from September. These are Debutots (Monday), Rugbytots / Sciencetots (Alternating Tuesdays) and Bilingausing / Spanish Class (Wednesday). Please note that the day that Forest School takes place on will alternate as required throughout the year. The activities may change days throughout the year in order for each child to take part. A post for each of the activities will be sent out in due course explaining a little bit more about each of them. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the team by dropping a comment below. We look forward to welcoming the children into the Swans Room and getting to know you all!

The Chicklets dressed up in blue too! Ducklings Room News

The Ducklings started the month off celebrating Yorkshire Day, engaging in imaginative play, as they used their mathematical skills of pouring and emptying to serve their friends cups of tea. The Ducklings also enjoyed celebrating Italy as our County of the Month. They had fun serving and exploring different shapes of pasta in our role-play kitchen, painting over shapes using the colours of the Italian flag and developing their culinary skills in the kitchen, making their very own dough and topping their pizzas with their favourite toppings. We also had a Football Friday to celebrate the English Women’s football team reaching the final in the World Cup! We headed off into the Big Garden where we practiced kicking the balls into the nets and learned how to pass the ball to our friends. Some of our ducklings even scored a "GOAL!!". Great teamwork work Ducklings! The Ducklings have all enjoyed their transitional visits to the Cygnet Room and have been really interested in playing in the Big Garden, developing their gross motor movements, jumping from small heights, playing superheroes, counting out scoops of sand into buckets in the sand pit, running up and down the hill and scrambling up the bark, to go down the slide. We also wanted to say a massive thank you to all parents and carers for your support throughout the year. It has been such a pleasure to get to know you and see your children grow and develop during the past year. They will all be missed so much in the Ducklings Room, but we're sure that they will all have an amazing experience in the Cygnets Room!

It has certainly been a busy time in the Goslings Room! We started off the month by celebrating the Women’s World Cup and England getting into the final by wearing our football kits and playing football in the Big Garden. We also had tuff trays set up with red pasta and white flour to make the England flag. Despite the weather not being the greatest, we still took advantage of every bit of sun and enjoyed lots of water play using different materials and textures such as rose petals and paint. We even enjoyed fish and chips with peas in cones to celebrate Beach Day at the nursery! We also celebrated Carnival Week during August and the Goslings have enjoyed creating their very own masks using paper plates, feathers, tissue paper and paint! We even enjoyed coloured sand using food colouring to represent the festive carnival colours. Lastly, the Goslings have been very excited to start their settle sessions in the Cygnets Room, as they move on September 4th. They have all shown such great enthusiasm after every settle and are more than ready to take that next step. The Goslings will be very much missed in our room and are looking forward to waving over the balcony when we see them in the Big Garden. We just want to say a big thank you to our wonderful Goslings parents as well, for the support the past year, we will miss seeing you all alongside the children!

At the beginning of the month, we celebrated Yorkshire Day. The Cygnets children loved taking part in lots of exciting activities relating to Yorkshire. Some children enjoyed creating the Yorkshire Rose in the Creative Area using resources of their choice. Other children loved playing in the water tuff tray where they enjoyed pretending to make cups of tea using the water and tea bags. The Cygnet children also loved celebrating Carnival Week, where they got very creative and made bright crowns, eye masks and bracelets out of brightly coloured resources. We also had our own Carnival around the garden whilst playing musical instruments. In August we also had our annual Beach Party Day! We had so much fun on the big slip and slide, as well as taking part in lots of water play. For lunch, the children enjoyed some yummy fish and chips made by Chef Oli. As England reached the final of the Women’s World Cup we had a football-themed day to celebrate. All the children came in their best football kits and we had a fun-filled day full of football activities. We played football in the garden, designed our own football kits and played finger football in the Finger Gym area. Finally, this month we have been preparing the Cygnets children for their transition to the Swans Room. They have been going for short visits regularly to get to know all the practitioners, as well as getting to know their new environment. We have loved looking after all of the Cygnets children this year. We are going to really miss everyone, but we wish the children the best of luck in their new adventures!

In August we celebrated Yorkshire Day. We worked together as a team to make a big Yorkshire rose to hang in the reception. Another day the children got to have a taste of Chef Oli’s very yummy Yorkshire Puddings to accompany their delicious roast dinner. We also took an imaginary adventure to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. After looking at some very curious and amazing sculptures we decided to all try making our own mini sculptures with salt dough. We also learnt about how magma is inside the volcano, and we call it lava once it comes out of the volcano. We also looked at photos of people visiting volcanoes and decided to make a larger volcano out of the maths table. We flipped it over and worked as a team to turn it into a volcano. We then 'tricked' Alex and Shosh as we rang them to tell them there was an emergency. Shosh came in and thought it was a real volcano! She was so shocked! We also completed lots of other volcano-related activities including 'lava slime', salt painting, the floor is lava, lava blow painting and the volcano parachute game. We also celebrated a football-themed day this month to show our support to the women's football team (The Lionesses) who made it to the World Cup final! We practiced stopping the ball with our feet, dribbling and scoring goals. We went outside to play a game and the children put their new skills into practice. We will miss all of the children who have now moved up to school but know they are ready for their school adventures. Wishing you lots of luck everyone!
