Country of the Month, September 2024 Throughout August, we have explored Saint Kitts and Nevis. The children enjoyed creating their very own Carnival masks using a range of recycled materials and bright colours, making pineapple upside down loaf and an exotic fruit salad! The children also explored some of the famous landscapes and beaches in Saint Kitts and Nevis, creating their very own versions in the construction area too. Throughout September, rather than focusing on one Country of the Month, we will be getting to know our new children and families joining the Nursery and celebrating everywhere that everyone is from. If you have any celebrations or festivals linked to your family that would like us to add to our annual event calendar, please just let us know!
Yorkshire Day Celebrations Ey Up! The children had lots of fun on Thursday 1st August celebrating Yorkshire Day. We explored the beauties of our county and created the Yorkshire Flag using different, natural materials. Everyone also enjoyed some lovely Wensleydale cheese with crackers during snack time and had fun exploring Yorkshire tea-themed tuff trays and activities.

Sports Week: 29th July - 2nd August At the beginning of August, the children carried on celebrating the Olympics, which began in Paris on 26th July. The children enjoyed learning all about the different competitions and races taking place, reading stories about the Olympics, creating their own Olympic torches using recycled materials, and participating in lots of races with their friends. The children also created their very own Olympic medals!
Carnival Week Celebrations In support of Leeds West Indian Carnival, we held our own Carnival Week! The children came to the nursery in their bright clothes, and we made some traditional headpieces, which we then used for our carnival disco and parade. We also explored colourful feathers in our messy play tray, where the children used their senses to explore. We finished the celebrations with a traditional Caribbean meal of jerk chicken, rice and peas.

Yorkshire Aid Convoy: Friday 9th - Friday 16th August On Friday 9th August, our CEO Simon Pollard along with a team of volunteers, joined a convoy of 7.5 tonne lorries to drive roughly 5,000 km on a round trip to help distribute vital aid to those displaced by the war in Ukraine. The team successfully reached Ukraine and delivered a huge amount of humanitarian aid, with a focus to help orphanages and hospitals, who provide life-saving service to young children. We would like to say a big thank you to all our families for your support during the convoy. It has been great to see the children getting involved and helping with fundraising too, by handing out charity pots in our local community, and drawing some beautiful pictures for the children in the orphanages. Every donation that has been made, no matter how big or small made a huge difference! We are so proud to announce that a total of £12,540.86 has been raised for Yorkshire Aid!

Ingredients • 225g soft vegan butter • 225g self-raising flour • 5 large free-range eggs • 75g sliced black olives, drained
• 100g sun-dried tomatoes • 5g fresh or dried oregano
Method 1. Using a kitchen aid or hand mixer, soften the butter in a mixing bowl then add the eggs, one at a time to a nice, consistent batter. 2. Sieve your self-raising flour and then slowly whisk it into your batter. 3. Drain and then finely dice the sun-dried tomatoes. Add them to the mix along with the sliced dry black olives. Add any additional herbs you like, we use a sprinkle of oregano. 4. Preheat the oven to 180C for 10 minutes before adding the batter to a greased or parchment tray loaf tin. Chicklets Room Introduction
Tapestry: Tapestry is a vital tool that is used across the nursery to communicate with you on a day-to-day basis to share your child’s development in observations. Your child will have a ‘My Day at Nursery’ post each day that they attend, which will consist of pictures as well as information as to how much they have eaten, nappies, sleep, any bottles they have had and a brief sentence about what they have been doing that day. Your child’s Key Person will be responsible for your child’s planning and assessments within the room. You will also receive regular ‘Wow Moments’ (that has been completed by your Key Person) that you are able to read at home. Each ‘Wow Moment’ will be marked against the EYFS curriculum to monitor your child’s progress. Please feel free to post on Tapestry too! You can let us know what your child is enjoying at home or anything fun you have been up to at the weekends / evenings. We can then use this further your child at nursery by basing our activities around their interests. Tapestry is also available to download on your phone or tablet as an app which some parents find an easy way to access. If you have any difficulties accessing Tapestry, feel free to ask myself and anyone in the room. In my bag: We do ask that each child brings in their own bag to be placed on their peg with a few essentials for their day at nursery! Unfortunately, we cannot accept drawstring bags or plastic bags are these are a choking hazard to our little Chicklets. Here’s a list of a few things your child will need: • Spare clothes (a couple of changes should be enough to warrant messy play and nappy accidents, we do ask that this doesn’t include any precious clothing as we like to get messy and wouldn’t want anything to get ruined) - Vests / Socks / Trousers / Tops / Dribble bibs / Coats / Jackets / Cardigans / Shoes • Bottles and Formula (if applicable - powder to be pre-weighed out in individual containers) • Wipes (these will be kept in your child’s individual nappy basket) • Nappy cream (this will be kept in your child’s individual nappy basket) • Teething aids (granules / gels / oils / teethers) • Weather appropriate clothing (gloves / hats / scarves / sun hats / suncream / puddle suits / wellies / etc...) • Comforters (teddies / dummies / etc...) We will always try out best to ensure all items are returned safely home. We would highly recommend labelling your child’s things, however, as this helps us to remember which child they belong to! We have lots of Chicklets to remember which item belongs to each and sometimes get a little confused so we would hate for anything to get lost. Pictures: Please could you upload a portrait photo of your child to be used on your child’s individual peg. This photo will also be used on our birthday banner and their placemat. Please could we also ask for you to upload some family photos for our ‘My Family’ display, this is a great way to help the Chicklets Room feel more homely and to help your child settle into nursery. Chico the Chicklet:
In the Chicklets Room, we have a room mascot who loves to join you on adventures and take pictures to share with us back at nursery; here’s a little message from him: “Hi everyone! My name is Chico and I am the Chicklets Room mascot! I will be taking turns to visit your homes over the coming weeks to join in on some of your adventures. I can’t wait to see what exciting things we will get up to and record it in my diary! See you soon, Chico”.

The Swans Room also has an outdoor classroom, shared with the Cygnets. Both indoor and outdoor classrooms are available for the children to explore every day, as well as access to the Big Garden too! Toilet area: There are three toilets in the Swans Room for the children to use. The children are encouraged to go to the toilet regularly especially before each mealtime and before and after they have been in the garden. We also encourage the children to regularly wash their hands and promote independence with dressing. Mealtimes: During mealtimes we have individual placemats with each child’s photo and dietary details on the tables to encourage them to find their seats. Placemats are then attached to the back of the chairs, to be visible to all staff in the room and make them aware of each child’s dietary requirements and any allergies. A dietary and allergy sheet will also always be available to all staff to see, but only the Room Leader or the Deputy Room Leader will hand out any food for children with dietary or allergy requirements. The children will also be provided with metal cutlery, such as: knives and forks and will be encouraged to self-serve their own food.

Chicklets Room News
Happy ‘end of August’ to everyone from the Chicklets Room. The Chicklets have been super busy exploring everywhere this month- we have made lots of trips to Roundhay Park and enjoyed playing football, looking at the ducks in the lake and exploring the fairy garden in the woods! Avoiding the drizzly days, the Chicklets have spent lots of time outdoors and during the sunny days we have had lots of fun in the paddling pools splashing, pouring and filling containers. To celebrate Yorkshire Day on 1st August we enjoyed exploring a water tray with flavoured tea bags and made our very own cups of tea. We also enjoyed lots of sensory-coloured rice and feathers and used our gross motor skills whilst dancing to lively music to celebrate Carnival Week. We had so much fun! In September we have the Harvest Festival to look forward to, The European Day of Languages and the children will be doing lots of baking for our bake sale. The Chicklets have also explored the Goslings Room during their settles and have all thrived in their new room. They have enjoyed getting to know their new key workers and exploring their new environment. They were very excited each time it was their turn to visit their new room and all very ready for their next adventures as Goslings.

Ducklings Room News
The Ducklings have had a fantastic August. We kickstarted the month with lots of celebrations around the Olympics. We started the day with an Olympic-themed messy activity using edible resources. The Ducklings made their own torch using cream cheese and seasoning paprika on top to resemble the torch. The Ducklings also enjoyed doing car and boat races and challenging each other. The Ducklings have also been doing their annual baking sessions, this month some of the Ducklings got to walk to the local shop for ingredients to make healthy pizza wraps. The Ducklings enjoyed choosing the ingredients from the shelves and paying the man at the counter once we had finished our shopping, we were big helpers! We headed back to the nursery with our ingredients and we all had a go at making our own pizza wraps. We spoke about the different ingredients we used ‘sweetcorn, peppers and mushrooms’ to fill the wraps. The children were really confident with their fine motor skills and were able to spread the tomato purée around, as well as add the yummy ingredients. The Ducklings all made their own little masterpiece, and they looked amazing! As always we love to go on trips into our community, this month the Ducklings went on a trip to the local café and library. We went on the bus and stopped to have some delicious babyccinos in the café. We also went to the library and read some lovely stories. We chose some books to take back with us. It was then time to go to go back to nursery on the bus. We had the best time, the Ducklings had so much fun!

Goslings Room News
What a fabulous month we’ve had in the Goslings Room. We have had many laughs, many cuddles and many activities. We have celebrated a lot of culture this month with it being Yorkshire Day, Pakistan Independence Day and Carnival Week. We celebrated by listening to music, baking food and exploring colours. The Goslings children have really enjoyed learning about each other and talking about their families, incorporating the materials and food ingredients into their roleplay. We have had a few trips out into our community this month. We started off the month with a trip to the bakery and charity shops where we found a ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ bag. The children hunted around the big garden for natural resources to fill up their own sensory bottles which created the perfect story sack. The children use this daily and love to use the bottle when retelling the story. We have also had a few more trips out to the park! Throughout August the children have enjoyed their settles into the Cygnets Room, they’ve spoken about the fun things they’ve been doing and they’ve really enjoyed playing with the Chicklets when they have been down to visit. We also said a big goodbye to Kimberly who has been doing Shake, Rattle and Boogie with us for the past two years, we made her a big card and gave her a big cuddle on our last session. We are so sad to see our Goslings go, however, we’re excited to watch them flourish in the Cygnets Room. We are also super happy to welcome our new cohort, we can’t wait to see what they get up to!

The Swans’ children have loved celebrating and learning all about the Olympics.
