September Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our September newsletter, and as always, a very warm welcome to all the new families who have recently joined us. At the beginning of each month, we send a newsletter to all our families to share details of all the news and events that have taken place, or will take place, throughout the Nursery. We hope that you will find our newsletter useful and informative! August has been a very busy month for everyone at 22 Street Lane, with so many settles taking place to prepare the children for the move to their new rooms. The children are all ready for their transitions and we hope they all settle with ease into their new environments. We are looking forward to a busy September as we welcome lots of new little Chicklets, Ducklings and Goslings to the nursery. To find out more, please read on...

NEWS

Goodbye to Tasha, Lizzie and Sarah Unfortunately, we said goodbye to Tasha at the beginning of August, as she had to make the difficult decision to resign from her position due to her health. We are sorry to share this news, as Tasha was such an important and valued member of the team. We are sending her lots of well wishes and hope

she is feeling better soon! She will be very missed!

Sadly, we will also be saying said goodbye to both Lizzie and Sarah at the end of August. Lizzie worked for us for many years as a member of our Bank Staff team, whilst completing her degree. As she has now graduated, Lizzie has returned home, where she will begin her Postgraduate Degree in Teacher Training shortly. Sarah will also be starting a new position as ‘Head of Preschool’ at another setting. They will both be missed, but we wish them the best of luck for the future!

Nursery Closure - Staff Training Day The Nursery will be closed on Thursday 30th October for our staff training day. We have two staff training days per year, and we ensure that these are on different days each year. We thank you for your support.

September Newsletter NEWS

Country of the Month, September 2025: Families Around The World Throughout August we have explored Brazil, linked to Leeds Carnival!

The children enjoyed creating their very own Carnival masks and rainbows using a range of recycled materials and bright colours, making pineapple upside down loaf and also enjoyed some yummy jerk chicken, rice and peas! The children also explored some of the famous landmarks in Brazil, creating their very own versions in the construction area too. Throughout September, rather than focusing on one Country of the Month, we will be getting to know our new children and families joining the nursery and celebrating everywhere that everyone is from. If you have any celebrations or festivals linked to your family that you would like us to add to our annual event calendar, please just let us know!

Uniform Sale We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their donations to our uniform sale and we hope you find the items useful. We raised a total of £308.50 which has been donated to Martin House Children’s Hospice, a truly wonderful cause.

Dish of the Month

Jerk Chicken with Rice and Peas

See our past selections on: 22streetlanenursery.co.uk/dish-of-the-month/

Ingredients • 500g of chicken thighs (or inner fillets if preferred) • 1 tin of kidney beans • 1 red onion • 1 cinnamon stick • Selection of jerk spices such as cinnamon powder, allspice, Cajun, garlic powder, brown sugar and a mix of chillies and chilli powder • 1 star anise • Thyme sprigs • 1 clove of garlic • 500g of basmati rice

• 1 vegetable stock cube • 2 tins of coconut milk • 2 bay leaves • 1 red chilli • 2 spring onions

Method 1. Start by marinating the chicken. This is best done the day before, using whichever spices you’d like, depending on how hot and spicy you like it. 2. Wash the rice and set it aside. Finely dice the onion and garlic and sauté on a soft heat. Add the washed rice and caramelise. Add the cinnamon stick, bay leaves, star anise and thyme. If you would like to add some extra spice to the rice, then add it at this point. 3. Make the vegetable stock by following the instructions on the packaging, and add the coconut milk. Slowly add the liquid mixture to the rice and cook for 7/8 minutes on a medium heat. Add your washed kidney beans to the rice. Take the rice off the heat and cover with tin foil. Allow the rice to continue to cook with steam. 4. Pre-heat the oven to 190-200°C , or you can alternatively use a BBQ to grill the jerk chicken. Make sure you cook the chicken to over 75°C until it is nice and crisp and tender. Rest the chicken on top of the rice so the juices flavour the rice. Garnish with roughly sliced spring onions and chilli.

Before your child starts, they will be allocated one of these members of the Chicklets Team to be their Key Person. Your child’s Key Person will be responsible for ensuring that your child’s emotional and physical needs are met; they will help your child settle into nursery life and they will observe and record their development. You and your child will get to know their Key Person during their settle sessions. In the event that your child’s Key Person is off, then we have a secondary Key Person system in place that will take over the roles of their main Key Person at that time. Although each child has their own Key Person, we encourage staff to bond with all the children. The Daily Routine we follow in the Chicklets Room is as follows: 8:00-9:00: Breakfast 9:00-10:00: Free flow play / Key Person time / outside play 10:00-10:15: Snack 10:15-11:30: Free flow play / Key Person time / outside play 11:30-12:00: Lunch 12:00-14:00: Free flow play / Key Person time 14:00-14:15: Snack 14:15-15:30: Free flow play / Key Person time / outside play 15:30-16:00: Tea 16:00-18:00: Free Flow play In the Chicklets Room, the routine fits around the individual needs of each child. The children will sleep at different times depending on their routine at home. This is similar to mealtimes, where some children may only have bottles, others will be eating full meals. For sleep time, we have coracles and sleep mats in the sleep area for the children have their naps. They will have their own labelled bed sheet and blanket, which are cleaned every week and stored in their individual baskets. Pick up and drop off: A member of staff will meet you at the door at the top of the stairs for handover, please gain a member of the Chicklets staff’s attention, by knocking on the window, and they can let us know you are waiting.

Chicklets Room Introduction

Tapestry: Tapestry is a vital tool that is used across the nursery to communicate with you on a day-to-day basis to share your child’s development in observations. Your child will have a ‘My Day at Nursery’ post each day that they attend, which will consist of pictures as well as information as to what was on the menu, nappies, sleep, any bottles they have had and a brief sentence about what they have been doing that day. Your child’s Key Person will be responsible for your child’s planning and assessments within the room. You will also receive regular ‘Wow Moments’ (that has been completed by your Key Person) that you are able to read at home. Each ‘Wow Moment’ will be marked against the EYFS curriculum to monitor your child’s progress. Please feel free to post on Tapestry too! You can let us know what your child is enjoying at home or anything fun you have been up to at the weekends / evenings. We can then use this further your child at nursery by basing our activities around their interests. Tapestry is also available to download on your phone or tablet as an app which some parents find an easy way to access. If you have any difficulties accessing Tapestry, feel free to ask myself and anyone in the room. In my bag: We do ask that each child brings in their own bag to be placed on their peg with a few essentials for their day at nursery! Unfortunately, we cannot accept drawstring bags or plastic bags are these are a choking hazard to our little Chicklets. Here’s a list of a few things your child will need: • Spare clothes (a couple of changes should be enough to warrant messy play and nappy accidents, we do ask that this doesn’t include any precious clothing as we like to get messy and wouldn’t want anything to get ruined) - Vests / Socks / Trousers / Tops / Dribble bibs / Coats / Jackets / Cardigans / Shoes • Bottles and Formula (if applicable - powder to be pre-weighed out in individual containers) • Wipes (these will be kept in your child’s individual nappy basket) • Nappy cream (this will be kept in your child’s individual nappy basket) • Teething aids (granules / gels / oils / teethers) • Weather appropriate clothing (gloves / hats / scarves / sun hats / suncream / puddle suits / wellies / etc...) • Comforters (teddies / dummies / etc...) We will always try out best to ensure all items are returned safely home. We would highly recommend labelling your child’s things, however, as this helps us to remember which child they belong to! We have lots of Chicklets to remember which item belongs to each and sometimes get a little confused so we would hate for anything to get lost. Pictures: Please could we ask for you to upload some family photos for our ‘My Family’ display, this is a great way to help the Chicklets Room feel more homely and to help your child settle into nursery. Chico the Chicklet:

In the Chicklets Room, we have a room mascot who loves to join you on adventures and take pictures to share with us back at nursery; here’s a little message from him: “Hi everyone! My name is Chico and I am the Chicklets Room mascot! I will be taking turns to visit your homes over the coming weeks to join in on some of your adventures. I can’t wait to see what exciting things we will get up to and record it in my diary! See you soon, Chico”.

Chicklets Room News

We started the month by celebrating Gruffalo Week! The Chicklets enjoyed getting involved in all the different Gruffalo-themed activities! The children enjoyed exploring the Gruffalo messy tray, where they had to find different animals from the Gruffalo story, and used their fine motor skills to mix and crunch the Gruffalo crumble! The Chicklets also helped make some yummy ‘Gruffalo Crumble Bites’, and did so well at waiting for their turn at mixing the ingredients and helped Chloe roll them into little balls. They were so yummy! As always, the Chicklets have also been loving trips to the local park. The Chicklets enjoyed a trip to Roundhay Park and saw some beautiful wildlife along the way. We took a stroll through the fairy houses to see if any fairies were at home! The Chicklets enjoyed walking around the lake, feeding the ducks, seeing a heron and even a beautiful blue kingfisher bird! The Chicklets have been celebrating Carnival Week; they enjoyed exploring all the different colours we see at the Carnival in the tray using our transportation schemas to empty and fill! We danced to some carnival music and tried on different carnival brightly coloured outfits!

Ducklings Room News

To start the month, we celebrated ‘Yorkshire Day’. The Ducklings had so much fun exploring our ‘Yorkshire Tea’ themed tray, they loved pouring the water into the tea cups, mixing the tea bags and pretending to take a sip of the tea! Gruffalo Week was also amazing in the Ducklings Room, especially as it’s one of our core books and the children’s favourite books. We set out lots of fun and exciting activities, such as a Gruffalo crumble playdough tray with spoons and flour, a cereal tray with all the animals from the book, a hidden Gruffalo tray and we even created our very own Gruffalo faces using sticks and leaves, which the Ducklings loved! We also really enjoyed lots of warm weather! We went out into the garden a lot to splash in the paddling pools and relaxed in the shade, reading our favourite stories. We spotted a lot of insects, such as caterpillars and butterflies. The Ducklings were fascinated by all of this, so we set out an insect-themed tuff tray to enhance their learning, where we discussed the insect names and colours. Wow - what a fantastic year we have had with our Ducklings! We can’t believe all of the children are already moving to Cygnets, but we know they are ready, as they are all so big and clever! We are going to miss them all so much, and wanted to say a huge thank you to our parents for all of the continued support this year and for always being so kind and understanding.

Goslings Room News

This month in the Goslings Room, the children have enjoyed learning about the Country of the Month – Brazil! We looked closely at the colours of the Brazilian flag and had lots of sensory tuff trays focused on it. During August, we also celebrated Gruffalo Week! This was the children’s favourite week as we had lots of fun activities supporting their favourite book. We baked some ‘turned out toes’ muffins and went on a Gruffalo hunt in the woods! Some of our children enjoyed dressing up as the Gruffalo and doing some crafts focusing on the ‘purple prickles all over his back’. We also had some lovely meals made in our home corner, ‘owl ice-cream’ being the most popular and a fun ‘scrambled snake’ spaghetti tuff tray for all the children to enjoy. We also celebrated Carnival this month, a lot of our Goslings enjoyed watching the parade, tasting the cuisine and listening to some traditional music. We have been doing lots of crafts, all things bright and colourful, and even painted and designed our own carnival t-shirts. In September, we are excited to welcome our current Chicklets to the Goslings Room, as they prepare for their next transition here at the nursery. We plan on utilising our first month to grow strong bonds and build new relationships with this cohort and their families. We are also super excited to welcome those joining us from outside of nursery, and look forward to getting to know you all. At the end of the month, we will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah and doing some fun baking for the Macmillan Bake Sale.

Cygnets Room News

This month, the children have been celebrating our Country of the Month – Brazil! They explored animals that live in the country, tried on some traditional dancing outfits, and created the colourful flag of Brazil! The children had lots of fun crafting their own versions of the flag using tissue paper, playdough and paint. They enjoyed exploring the vibrant traditions of the famous Brazilian Carnival through colourful crafts, music, and dancing. It was wonderful to see the children’s creativity and enthusiasm shine as they took part in the festivities. The children have also made a fantastic start settling into their new room, showing great confidence and excitement as they explore the new space. We also spent a week focusing on one of our core books - The Gruffalo. The children loved making tasty Gruffalo crumble, creating the different characters from the story, and retelling the tale in their own imaginative ways. Well Done! We would also like to say a heartfelt goodbye to all of our Cygnets. It has been such a pleasure watching them grow and thrive over the past year. We are so proud of everything they have achieved and know they are ready for their exciting new adventures ahead. We will miss them dearly but wish them the very best as they take this next big step!

Swans Room News

Throughout August, we have been looking closely at Brazil as our Country of the Month. The children have enjoyed taking part in a variety of different activities, including making the Brazilian flag with a range of different materials. Linking to Brazil, we also celebrated carnival in August! The children had so much fun taking part in crafts using bright colours, for example, making carnival masks and taking part in some parade dancing! All of the children got involved in our Swans Sports Day with great enthusiasm, taking part in running races and the classic egg and spoon race. It was wonderful to see everyone trying their best and showing great sportsmanship! We cheered loudly for all of our friends and celebrated each other’s efforts - even those of the adults who had to have a go at the egg and spoon race! We have also been focusing on school readiness, as the children will soon be starting big school! We have read some lovely books linked to school, as well as having activities linked to the colour monster, to support the children to express how they are feeling. Finally, on behalf of the Swans team, we would like to wish all the children the best of luck in their new adventures at big school in September. They will all we missed but we know they will all be amazing!
