August Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

As August begins we are delighted to be able to provide another month of celebrations and fun packed activities for all to enjoy. Here is our latest news roundup and some information points to share with everyone. As always, a very special welcome to all new children and their families who have joined us during the last few weeks.

Staff News;

We would like to welcome Olivia Wilson to our Chicklets room. Olivia has had a great first week with us in the Chicklets room and is looking forward to starting her apprenticeship with us. “Prior to joining 22 Street lane Nursery I cared for children with disabilities and worked with vulnerable adults. I also volunteer within Leeds city council delivering child oriented events throughout the summer. Working with children has always been my passion, I am utterly fascinated in the growth and development of children, particularly through their early years. I will be completing my level 3 childcare qualification during my apprenticeship with 22 Street lane Nursery.

Congratulations Richard!

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Richard, his wife Helen and son Leo on the their new arrival.

1 st Birthday BBQ Party;

22 Street Lane Nursery celebrate 1st Birthday in style…

To celebrate our first year, we held a party for our most important customers - the children! We all had a wonderful time and luckily the weather stayed dry which meant we could enjoy the garden with party games and dancing followed by a delicious barbeque. We took the opportunity to invite a local photographer, Charlie Gregory of Arts Photography who joined us to help capture our special day. We have created a Flipbook with all the photos so you can see what we got up to on the day. Our Flipbook can be viewed on our first Birthday Page;

Parents can click ‘View our party photo’s’ which is the flipbook to the right of the page.

In addition to this, we have created a ‘’Parent Portal Download’’ area, uploaded all of the high-resolution photos for download to keep as a thank you to our parents and carers for your continued support during the last 12 months.

Local Links to the community and helping others;

22 Street Lane Nursery donated a new i-Pad as part of an auction for Harewood School which helped raise over £9,150. The evening was held to raise funds in order to improve the school’s technology for the local children. We are proud of the close links that we have formed within our local community since our inception and that we were able to support Harewood Primary. Jennifer Woodhall – Harewood C of E primary team member said; “The Harewood PTA auction of promises aimed to raise £6000 to help our school to provide interactive smart boards to allow the children to learn more effectively. We were overwhelmed with the support of local businesses that pledged prizes and promises. 22 Street lane very generously donated an iPad and we are incredibly grateful for them supporting our school”

Employee of the Month - July;

We are delighted to announce that July’s ‘Employee of the Month’ has been awarded to Laura Green in the Goslings room. Laura has been nominated by both the management team and by one of her key child’s parents. Laura joined us in October 2016 and is a great asset to the team. Laura is extremely passionate about delivering the highest standard of childcare and education and she is a truly outstanding practitioner. “Z has been in Goslings a while and Laura has consistently been nothing but helpful, enthusiastic and supportive. She actively seeks to work with us to encourage Z’s development - particularly in areas we are keen for him to progress in. Even though Laura does not know Urdu she has taken the initiative to learn phrases and words to encourage Z becoming bilingual (I understand Google translation has been a friend to her!). We appreciate all the work everyone in Goslings does, however we feel Laura deserves that extra thanks for the extra mile she goes.”

If you would like to nominate a member of staff for ‘Employee of the Month’ then please email your nomination to

Country of the Month: South Africa;

The children had a wonderful time celebrating ‘South Africa’ throughout July, it was great to see so many of the children dress up as African animals, they had lots of fun! The children enjoyed playing African instruments, learning about African animals and had a traditional lunch ‘bobotie’.

From the 29 th August to September 1 st we will be celebrating a selection of countries which make up the Caribbean! We will be having our very own Street Lane carnival and lots of exciting Caribbean activities. If you have any resources that will support our Caribbean week we would be most grateful.

Home Learning Bags;

The team have been really busy here at 22SLN creating a variety of ‘home learning bags’ which you are able to borrow from the nursery to support your child’s learning and development at home. Further opportunities for parents to spend time helping their children learn at home is highly recognised in the Early Years Foundation Stage and something that we fully support here at 22SLN. Each bag has been carefully designed to support your child’s development in different areas of learning and so far, they have been a great hit! The bags include various activities such as song and story time, messy play, sensory exploration, gardening, early maths and much more! If you would like to borrow a ‘Home learning bag’ please speak to your child’s key person so that they can arrange this. We would be most grateful if you could feedback to us on how your child engaged and interacted with the bag!

Reading aloud and sharing stories with your child is a great way to spend time together. Reading and storytelling also helps promote language, literacy and brain development. Reading and sharing stories can:

Story Bags;

• help your child become familiar with sounds, words, language and the value of books. • spark your child’s imagination, stimulate curiosity and help their brain development. • help your child learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make-believe’. • help your child understand change and new or frightening events, and also the strong emotions that can go along with them. • help your child develop early literacy skills like the ability to listen to and understand words.
