Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our August newsletter, as always, a warm welcome to our new families that have joined us. We would also like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to the families that are leaving us throughout August, we wish the children the best of luck starting their new schools. We have a had a jam-packed month throughout July here at 22SLN which started with our Swans Graduation. This was such a special occasion for our Swans teachers, parents and school leavers as they celebrated their time at 22SLN with a special ceremony and garden party, we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did! The children enjoying celebrated Spain as our country of the month and took part in many Spanish themed activities such as flamenco dancing, red and yellow messy play and making their own Spanish themed snacks. Towards the end of the month, we picked the perfect time for our ‘Beach Party’ week and made the most of the glorious sunshine. Throughout August, we have lots of activities planned for the children, including our Pirates week and Carnival week. To find out more please read on…

STAFF NEWS August Newsletter

Jahleea Gottshalk Congratulations to Jahleea from our Goslings room who has passed her apprenticeship with flying colours and qualifies as a qualified practitioner from the end of August. From September, Jahleea will be working part time in all of our rooms as she embarks on her next venture to University.

Holly Griffin As from August 12th, Holly will be moving from the Swans room to the Goslings room. Holly has been fantastic in the Swans room and it will be sad to see her leave, however, for her professional development, Holly has the opportunity to gain experience with a different age group. We look forward to Holly bringing her bubbly personality and positive energy to our Goslings room.

Alia Ahmad We would like to introduce you to Alia Ahmad who will be joining our Swans team on Wednesday 14th August as a ‘Qualified Practitioner’. Alia has a wealth of experience working with preschool aged children in both Dubai and the UK. We look forward to Alia bringing her skills and ideas to the Swans room. “Hello, my name is Alia. I am very excited to be joining the Swans room! I have a BA Hons degree in Childhood Studies, and I have completed my PGCEi course whilst working in Dubai.

I have been teaching for many years mainly in Leeds, as well as London for 3 years and Dubai for 4 years. I have always taught in pre-school as I find this is the perfect age group to explore and be adventurous while learning and having fun in the process. It is wonderful to see children excel in different areas as well as realise their own individuality and interests as they grow. I have always been passionate about teaching and seeing children reach their full potential. I am looking forward to joining such a positive and motivated team and bring lots of new and fun ideas to the room.”

Dana Hawkes A warm welcome to Dana who will be joining our Cygnets room on Tuesday 27th August as a qualified practitioner. Dana has previously been working as a Nursery Practitioner and Holiday club leader at an Outstanding Nursery in Nottingham, Dana is looking forward to getting to know you and your little ones. “Working and caring for children to me, is not only a career but a dream. Throughout my seven years of working with children I have found nothing more rewarding than being able to see an impact and the difference a good educator can make on a child’s life and development. I am super enthusiastic about creating a fun, enjoyable and stable educational setting for every child.

I love finding new and fun ways to incorporate different ways to teach and expand a child’s mind through their own common interests, and strongly believe that there are strong benefits of using the outdoors as a tool to initiate this. In my spare time I love spending time outdoors as well as spending quality time with my friends and family! I am extremely grateful and looking forward to joining the amazing team at 22 Street Lane Nursery.”

Country of the Month: JAMAICA (19th - 23rd August) This month we will be celebrating ‘Jamaica’ as our of country of the month! We will be having our very own Street Lane Carnival where the children will enjoy making carnival crown and masks, creating their own brightly coloured T-Shirts and exploring Jamaican food such as fried dumplings, jerk chicken and rice and peas! Did you know? Over 1 million tourists visit Jamaica every year, which only has a population estimated to be around 2.9 million. Jamaica’s main exports include products such as bananas, coffee and sugar.

Spanish Week The children had lots of fun celebrating Spain as our country of the month and learning about all things Spanish. The children made their own Spanish flags, created fans and explored red and yellow messy play. The Cygnets and Swans learned some Spanish words and learned how to count up to 10! The children enjoyed a Spanish banquet of Paella, Spanish meatballs and patatas bravas…rico!!

Beach Party Week We made the most of the heatwave with our very own ‘Beach Party’ week! The children took part in a variety of beach party activities such as sandcastle competitions, beach ball games and lots of water fun!! Our favourite was the water slide which we spent all morning whizzing down in the glorious sunshine! We then enjoyed a homemade lunch of the seaside classic ‘fish n chips’ followed by ice lollies and ice cream.

Swans Graduation The time has come where our Swans children ‘Class of 2019’ are leaving 22SLN to start their next adventure to ‘Big School’. We marked the occasion by celebrating with a graduation ceremony followed by a garden party and BBQ. It was such a special day; the children sang some of their favourite songs and then received a special certificate and gift. We believe that the children have developed many skills through throughout their time at 22SLN and developed many friendships, some that will we believe will last a lifetime.

5 stars awarded for our Environmental Health Inspection! Well done to Chris and Kim who have just been awarded 5 stars for his Environmental Health inspection. The inspector turned up unannounced at lunch time on the 25 th and inspected the following: • Allergy Management • Handling of food, conditions and structure of the kitchen • Documenting of food safety The inspector said if there was 6 stars, we would have most definitely been awarded it! Amazing work!

Yorkshire Day We will be kicking off the month by celebrating ‘Yorkshire Day’. We will be learning about our county Yorkshire and what makes it so special, we will be discussing our City, Leeds, and our favourite places to visit. We will be tasting traditional Yorkshire delights such as Wensleydale cheese, Rhubarb crumble, pikelets and last but not least, Yorkshire puds!!

Pirate Week; 5th - 9th August Ahoy there matey!

From the 5th-9th August we will be going Pirate mad at 22SLN! The children have the opportunity to take part in different pirate themed activities such as making treasure maps, treasure hunts, making pirate hats and walking the plank. On Thursday 8th August the children are welcomed to dress up in pirate themed clothes. What a fun filled week – Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Makaton Sign Language

As part of our team training day, we learned the basic signs of Makaton and how these can support the children in our setting. What is Makaton? Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Who is Makaton for? Makaton is the UK's leading language programme for adults and children with learning or communication difficulties. It is also used by everyone who shares their lives, for example, parents and other family members, friends and carers, and education and health professionals. Makaton is used for teaching communication, language and literacy skills with children and adults who are at an early stage of communication and language development. This structured approach can also help people who are learning English as an additional language, helping them to communicate straightaway, whilst also supporting their learning. We will be teaching Makaton to the children at nursery and would like to share a sign with you every month!

Nursery World Finalists: Online & Social Media

22 Street Lane Nursery are delighted to announce that we have officially been shortlisted as a finalist for the Nursery World Awards 2019 for the category of ‘Online and Social Media’. The Nursery World Awards receive a huge number of entries from across the UK, making us even prouder to have been selected as a finalist! These prestigious awards shine a light on best practice, and winners are chosen by a panel of expert judges which represent the ‘crème de la crème’ of the early years sector! We love to be able to keep parents and carers in the loop through our online and social media presence, such as using Tapestry to document your child’s day and develop the relationship between the practitioners and parents!

The children get up to so many exciting activities during their time with us, it’s a pleasure to share this on social media along with delicious recipe ideas, general nursery updates and events. We use our website and social media accounts as an opportunity to create a communication platform that benefits users, be it parents, carers or prospective families! We ensure information that you need, such as our safeguarding policy or Ofsted report, are easy to access as well as information on our activities like woodworking or forest school.

Dish of the Month

Jerk Chicken with Rice and Peas See our past selections on: 22streetlanenursery.co.uk/dish-of-the-month/

Ingredients

For the jerk chicken • 12 chicken thighs, bone in • 1 lime, halved • hot sauce, to serve (optional) • For the marinade

For the rice & peas • 200g basmati rice

• 400g can coconut milk • 3 scotch bonnet chillies • ½ tsp dried thyme, or 1 tbsp thyme leaves • 1 lime, juiced • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 1 bunch spring onions, sliced • 2 large thyme sprigs • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 tsp ground allspice • 2 x 410g cans kidney beans, drained

• 1 big bunch spring onions, roughly chopped • Thumb-sized piece ginger, roughly chopped

• 3 garlic cloves • ½ a small onion

• 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 3 tbsp brown sugar • 1 tbsp ground allspice

Method 1. To make the jerk marinade, combine the spring onions, ginger, garlic, onion, scotch bonnet chillies, dried thyme, lime juice, soy sauce, vegetable oil, brown sugar and ground allspice in a food processor along with 1 tsp salt, and blend to a purée. If you’re having trouble getting it to blend, just keep turning off the blender, stirring the mixture, and trying again. Eventually it will start to blend up – don’t be tempted to add water, as you want a thick paste. 2. Taste the jerk mixture for seasoning – it should taste pretty salty, but not unpleasantly, puckering salty. You can now throw in more chillies if it’s not spicy enough for you. Make a few slashes in 12 chicken thighs and pour the marinade over the meat, rubbing it into all the crevices. Cover and leave to marinate overnight in the fridge. 3. If you want to barbecue your chicken, get the coals burning around 1 hour before you’re ready to cook. Authentic jerked meats are not exactly grilled as we think of grilling, but sort of smoke- grilled. To get a more authentic jerk experience, add some wood chips to your barbecue, and cook your chicken over slow, indirect heat for 30 mins. 4. To cook in the oven, heat to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Put the chicken pieces in a roasting tin with the halved lime and cook for 45 mins until tender and cooked through. While the chicken is cooking, prepare the rice & peas. Rinse the basmati rice in plenty of cold water, then tip it into a large saucepan. Add the coconut milk, spring onions, thyme sprigs, garlic and ground allspice. 5. Season with salt, add 300ml cold water and set over a high heat. Once the rice begins to boil, turn it down to a medium heat, cover and cook for 10 mins. Add the kidney beans to the rice, then cover with a lid. Leave off the heat for 5 mins until all the liquid is absorbed. 6. Squeeze the roasted lime over the chicken and serve with the rice & peas.

The Chicklets have been enjoying the glorious sunshine and have all loved spending time outdoors in the baby garden. They have been exploring the different messy play activities outside, building sandcastles and splashing in the bubbles and water play. The babies enjoyed an outing to Roundhay park this month, we went and had some yummy fruit by the lake and said hello to all the Swans and Ducks. The babies enjoyed pointing out the different animals on the walk such as the dogs whilst imitating the sounds they make. We have also been celebrating our Country of the month ‘Spain’ in the Chicklets room. The chicklets have been busy exploring the red and yellow sensory tray. They have also been doing some red and yellow painting which we then made into Spanish dresses. A favourite activity enjoyed whilst celebrating Spain was the red and yellow shredded paper and feather play. The babies enjoyed sprinkling the shredded paper and blowing the feathers in the air. The Chicklets continue to enjoy tiny dancers, we have been having our sessions outdoors as the weather has become much nicer. The Chicklets have enjoyed showing June their dance moves and watching the bubbles floating in the air. We have introduced the parachute in the tiny dancer’s session which the children love and became very excited about.

Ducklings Room News

The Ducklings children have been very busy this month! They have enjoyed celebrating our country of the month ‘Spain’ by creating their own Spanish flags using yellow and red paint. They have also been doing some cooking as they’ve made and tried some of their own Spanish food including ‘Patatas Bravas’. The Ducklings have also been enjoying the sunshine, as we had a ‘Beach Party’ at the nursery the children have enjoyed exploring water and sand, they have created some fantastic sandcastles and enjoyed emptying and filling in the water trays as well as creating our very own water slide. The Children continue to enjoy their ‘Tiny Dancers’ session with June, we have recently had our classes outdoors as the weather has been fantastic this month.

Goslings Room News

Throughout July the Goslings have been putting their cooking skills to the test. They have done this in the role play area, the mud kitchen, through messy play and by helping in some real cooking activities. The children have helped to make a variety of different foods including: Healthy smoothie ice lollies, banana bread with cream cheese frosting and Spanish tomato bread to celebrate our Country of the month ‘Spain’. The older children helped to chop up the tomatoes and add them to the mixing bowl. Next, the children explored the basil and garlic using their sense of smell and taste. We were very surprised to find that the children thought the garlic smelled and tasted “yummy”. Once the rest of the ingredients had been added to the bowl each child took it in turns to mix and mash them all together. The Goslings continued to celebrate Spain my cooking up play dough churros with a cinnamon dip in the messy play area. The Goslings were able to roll these out and mould them into the shape they wanted using different tools. The cooking messy play didn’t stop as the sensory tray has also turned into a large pan so that the Goslings could pretend to cook paella. Added to the sensory tray was different coloured rice, seafood, shells and mixing spoons.

Cygnets Room News

The Cygnets have had an extremely busy month, we have been exploring our country of the month 'Spain’ including learning how to count 'Uno, dos, tres' in Spanish and also how to say Hello 'Hola' and Goodbye 'Adios'. The Cygnets have been enjoying exploring the Travel Agents in the Role Play, taking on the role of a 'travel agent' and 'customer' using the telephone and laptop. We have had our very own 'Cygnets Sports Day' the children enjoyed taking turns as they had mini races doing the sack race and the egg and spoon race. We have talked a lot about emotions this month in the Cygnets room, encouraging the children to tell us how they feel as well as supporting them to understand how others may feel in certain situations. The Cygnets have shown much interest in Makaton, we have been teaching the children a different nursery rhyme in Makaton each week including; Three Little Monkeys, Old Mac Donald, Peter Rabbit and Row Row Row your Boat. The Children have enjoyed learning the signs and are keen to participate in Makaton classes every morning. The Older children have enjoyed using mats and coloured pegs to create many colourful patterns using two colours each time to make a different coloured pattern. We have thoroughly enjoyed the glorious weather this month and have spent much time outdoors, the Cygnets enjoyed ‘Beach Party’ week. They had fun exploring in the sand making many sandcastles as well as playing in the water and making our very own water slide in the big garden.

Swans Room News

The Swans have been very busy throughout July and have celebrated a number of exciting times. At the start of July, the Swans Leavers had their Graduation which was fantastic, and the children still can't stop talking about it! We performed a number of songs that the children had been practising for weeks and then presented each child with a certificate along with an announcement of what they aspire to be when they grow up! We hope you all thoroughly enjoyed it! Then the Swans have also been learning all about Spain which was our country of the month! The children have enjoyed creating the Spanish flag using red and yellow playdough, learning how to count 1-10 in Spanish, the days of the week and even the colours! We then consolidated this new learning further with the children completing their own Spanish colour charts and then rainbow pictures. As well as this, the Swans have also enjoyed looking at the traditional foods often eaten in Spain and have enjoyed making Mantecado biscuits and Raffaello coconut balls! Both of the sweet treats were delicious! We have also been placing a huge emphasis on 'school readiness' this month, as many of the Swans are preparing to start school in September. We have been placing more emphasis on Phonics looking over all the jolly phonics sounds regularly and beginning to blend and segment simple sounds. In Maths we have been focusing on number recognition, challenging the children to count out specific amounts of objects and match the amount to the correct numeral card.

Leaving Notice Please note that if your child is leaving 22 Street Lane Nursery in the summer, we require one month’s written notice unless your child is in the Swans room, we require six weeks written notice. Thank you. Room Transitions The majority of the children will be moving rooms throughout July and August, to support this, your child’s key person will be organising settling in sessions and share key information with your child’s new key person during their visit. You will be kept informed of your child’s transition via Tapestry, but if you have any questions, please speak to your child’s key person.

Swans and Cygnets Uniform Children can wear our nursery uniform in our Cygnets and Swans room, this is available from Rawcliffe’s uniform shop, 617 Roundhay Road, Leeds LS8 4AR.

Car Park As you are aware, there are double yellow lines outside the nursery which have been put there for the safety of the children. Please can we ask that parents do not park on them, and also be mindful of parking over more than one space in the car park. As you can appreciate we have very limited parking, and so the car park can become very busy. High Temperatures & Fevers Please can we remind parents that children cannot attend nursery if they have a high temperature (over 38 ° C). If a child develops a temperature whilst at nursery, parents will be called to collect them, as supported by our policies and procedures. We can administer non- prescribed Calpol for a temperature, although we must first receive permission in writing. HMRC Additional Funding Code (3 & 4 year old - 30 hours) If you are eligible and in receipt of additional 3 & 4 year-old funding, look out for a prompt every three months from HMRC to reconfirm your details so that your eligibility can be re-assessed. If you do not do this, please note that we are unable to claim the funding on your behalf. Sun Cream and Sunhats With the warmer months ahead, please can you ensure that your child has appropriate clothing for warm weather including sun cream and a sun hat. We would recommend that you provide sun cream which is factor 50 and at least a 4-star UVA rating. If you could please label your child’s sun cream and hat with their name it would be helpful. Absence Please note that we are unable to swap days or offer an alternative day if your child is absent from nursery. We are now extremely busy and it is impossible for us to do this for all children. This is stated in our terms and conditions. Thank you for your cooperation.

We continue to welcome all feedback from parents. If you would like to make a suggestion, then please post this in our ‘Parents Suggestion Box’ which is based on reception. Alternatively, you can speak to a member of staff. Drop Off and Collection Can we kindly remind you that we open at 7:30am and cannot accept children into the nursery before this time. We close at 6:00pm and any parents that pick up after this time will be charged. Thank you for your cooperation. Labels in Clothing To avoid items being lost, please can you ensure that your child’s uniform is clearly labelled including their coats, hats, scarves and wellies. If your child brings gloves to nursery, we strongly advise for these to be attached and threaded through their coat to avoid any gloves going missing . Contacting the Nursery Please can we kindly ask parents to try and only call the nursery rooms if necessary. It can be very difficult for the staff to keep coming to the phones when they are trying to look after the children and take appropriate breaks. Please note if ever we have a concern, we would always call so please be assured that they are having a good day unless we call you. Thank you for your understanding. Wipes Please note that although we provide nappies as part of our offering, wipes are not included in this. It has been noted that lots of children are coming to nursery without nappy wipes. Can we kindly remind parents to ensure that there is always a supply available for your child. Your child’s key person will remind you when they are running low. Moving forwards, we will be charging £15.00 per month to any parents that fails to bring wipes.
