May Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our May newsletter and as always, a warm welcome to all our new families that have recently joined us. It’s been another busy month in our setting as we celebrated Easter! We’ve had our Easter bonnet competition; the entries as always were phenomenal, we also had an Easter bake sale and we collected over 106 eggs which we donated to our local food bank, and finally, we has a special visit from the Easter bunny who hopped on over to join us in our egg hunt! As if all that excitement wasn’t enough we were also chosen as a finalist for NDNA Nursery of the Year! It’s such a great achievement to be shortlisted as a finalist and we thank every one of you that submitted your votes; we truly appreciate your support in getting us that one step closer to being recognised for our excellence. Throughout May we will be celebrating the country Greece! We will be creating the Greek flag, learning about the Greek gods and goddesses and tasting lots of yummy Greek food! On Wednesday 22nd May, we will be holding a ‘Greek Day’ where the children can wear Greek clothing or dress in the colours of the Greek flag, white and blue! If any parents have any resources that we can borrow to support the children’s learning such as maps, photographs, clothing, etc… we would be most grateful!

Tour De Yorkshire (2nd - 5th May) We will be supporting the Tour de Yorkshire on Friday 3rd May with our ‘Tour de 22 Street Lane’. The Swans children are welcome to bring in their bikes (children MUST have a helmet) to ride at nursery and have mini bike races! We will also be taking this opportunity to teach the children about road safety.

Happy Chick Company The children loved their visit from the Happy Chicken Company. The children watched and waited eagerly for the eggs to hatch. Once the chicks arrived, the children nurtured them until they were able to stand alone. The Swans made their own ‘chicken run’ using wooden blocks so that the chicks could exercise and learnt about the life cycle of an egg to chick. We hope that they come to see us next year!

New Summer Menu With the warmer months ahead, we are delighted to introduce our summer menu to the children. We have taken on board the suggestions that were made by you as parents and have implemented these to create a nutritious and diverse menu! We believe that a healthy nutritious diet is vitally important for growing minds and bodies that’s why our kitchen staff take great pride in preparing nutritious food every day. https://user-oywfmsr.cld.bz/22SLN-Summer-Menu

Chicklets The children have had a very busy month in the Chicklets room.

With spells of lovely weather, the children have been spending lots of time outdoors, this has particularly supported the children Physical development. They have enjoyed riding up and down on the bikes and climbing up the steps with support from an adult. The babies have also enjoyed exploring different messy play outside such as sand, water and bark. The Chicklets are really enjoying their Tiny Dancer sessions which are held on a Tuesday morning. They look forward to their teacher June coming in and enjoy popping the bubbles. Quite a few of our Chicklets have grown the confidence to start joining in with the actions to the nursery rhymes such as banging on the drums to 'The Grand Old Duke of York' We have also been celebrating Easter, we have had lots of Easter themed messy play such as shredded paper, feather play and searching for Easter eggs in the oats. The children also enjoyed Easter painting with the different animals.

Ducklings The Duckling’s have enjoyed a nature walk to look at the flowers and water fountains at Tropical Gardens. The children observed the different coloured flowers, the most popular colours were 'yellow' and 'purple', there were many opportunities for the children to use their senses such as smelling the flowers. The Ducklings have been interested in the 'Gingerbread Man' book at nursery and it is one of their favourite stories to read at story time. We thought it would be a nice idea for them all to make their own Gingerbread Men. The Ducklings all took turns to mix in the ingredients and then all individually took turns to roll out their piece of dough using a rolling pin and cut out their own 'gingerbread men’. All the children shared the resources with their friends and helped each other make their master gingerbread men. The Ducklings have also been very busy celebrating Easter. We enjoyed singing 'chick, chick chicken’ and using musical instruments. We have taken parts in lots of Easter crafts such as making our eggs using different materials. We have also had a feather and cornflake sensory tray with baby chicks, and an egg hunt in the sand! The Ducklings have also enjoyed looking at our 'Easter Curiosity Cube', where we placed chicks into the box to see if they had laid eggs each day - and they did! This was great for the children to develop their personal social and emotional development as well as understanding the world.

Cygnets The Cygnet's have enjoyed looking at Spring this month, we have been very busy looking at different flowers, making our own in the creative area and even planting our very own grass heads. We have been looking after our grass heads, watering them and using scissors to cut the grass when the grass has grown too long. The baby Chicks arrived in Swans this month and the Cygnets have loved going across to see them, we even looked after them for a day in our room - The Cygnets seemed to really enjoy filling up the water and food for the chicks and helping clean them out. The Children have shown much interest in number this month, we have been looking at numerals both indoors and outdoors and matching them to the correct quantity. We have been exploring the Life Cycle of the Butterfly, we had our very own caterpillars delivered which the children have been fascinated by. We have been watching them grow and are so excited to see them turn into Cocoons and Butterflies!

Swans The Swans have been very busy throughout April and have celebrated a number of exciting times. At the start of April, the Swans had a special delivery of living eggs from The Happy Chicks Company, and really enjoyed watching the eggs hatch learning all about the chick life cycle and commenting on any changes or similarities and differences they observed whilst the eggs were in the incubator. We were lucky enough for all 11 chicks to hatch, and the children then really enjoyed caring for the chicks for the following week, discovering what they eat and how to clean out their special box. The Swans have also been learning all about Spring taking part in lots of creative activities linked to the new season including creating their own daffodils, painting tulips using forks, and making their own chicks using toilet rolls and feathers! After this we celebrated Easter and the children had a fantastic Easter Bonnet parade in the big garden after designing their own bonnets at home. The children also participated in lots of Easter activities, including creating the Easter bunny using play dough, and going on an egg hunt in the garden! We have also celebrated Vaisakhi, another festival this month and the children really enjoyed creating their own Vaisakhi lanterns using lots of different coloured feathers and other materials. We also experimented with mark making in lots of brightly coloured sand trays, trying to write our names and other labels or captions. We are now very busy learning all about animals, this week focusing on farm animals in preparation for our very exciting trip to Meanwood farm soon! Thank you again for your continued support.

Car Park As you are aware, there are double yellow lines outside the nursery which have been put there for the safety of the children. Please can we ask that parents do not park on them, and also be mindful of parking over more than one space in the car park. As you can appreciate we have very limited parking, and so the car park can become very busy. High Temperatures & Fevers Please can we remind parents that children cannot attend nursery if they have a high temperature (over 38 ° C). If a child develops a temperature whilst at nursery, parents will be called to collect them, as supported by our policies and procedures. We can administer non- prescribed Calpol for a temperature, although we must first receive permission in writing. HMRC Additional Funding Code (3 & 4 year old - 30 hours) If you are eligible and in receipt of additional 3 & 4 year-old funding, look out for a prompt every three months from HMRC to reconfirm your details so that your eligibility can be re-assessed. If you do not do this, please note that we are unable to claim the funding on your behalf. Sun Cream and Sunhats With the warmer months ahead, please can you ensure that your child has appropriate clothing for warm weather including sun cream and a sun hat. *ATTENTION* Important Information - Please Read Parents Suggestions

We continue to welcome all feedback from parents. If you would like to make a suggestion then please post this in our ‘Parents Suggestion Box’ which is based on reception. Alternatively, you can speak to a member of staff. Drop Off and Collection Can we kindly remind you that we open at 7:30am and cannot accept children into the nursery before this time. We close at 6:00pm and any parents that pick up after this time will be charged. Thank you for your cooperation. Labels in Clothing To avoid items being lost, please can you ensure that your child’s uniform is clearly labelled including their coats, hats, scarves and wellies. If your child brings gloves to nursery we strongly advise for these to be attached and threaded through their coat to avoid any gloves going missing . Contacting the Nursery Please can we kindly ask parents to try and only call the nursery rooms if necessary. It can be very difficult for the staff to keep coming to the phones when they are trying to look after the children and take appropriate breaks. Please note if ever we have a concern we would always call so please be assured that they are having a good day unless we call you. Thank you for your understanding. Wipes Please note that although we provide nappies as part of our offering, wipes are not included in this. It has been noted that lots of children are coming to nursery without nappy wipes. Can we kindly remind parents to ensure that there is always a supply available for your child. Your child’s key person will remind you when they are running low. Moving forwards, we will be charging £15.00 per month to any parents that fails to bring wipes.
