Swans; We have been very busy in the Swans this month.

We have restarted our forest school sessions. In our first week we found a den which had been made by some other children, inside we found a toy swap. We decided that the following week we would bring some toys that we no longer played with and swap them for some others in the basket. This has really developed our sense of being part of a community and encouraged us to share our resources. In our final week, we gathered leaves and made crowns. We became Kings and Queens of the forest. We have been focusing on C and K recently. Children have been asked to bring something to nursery which begins with a C or K. We have had a large collection of keys and key rings. As always, we have been learning the jolly phonics songs which involve kites flying in the sky and clicking castanets. Not only does this help us with learning the initial sounds/letters of words it also supports our turn taking skills. On our mark making table we have had our letter stones out to allow the children to copy letters. Also, to support our fine motor skills, we have been using hammers to tap golf tees into a pumpkin. We of course talked about safety in the first instance and the children ensured that they had goggles on to protect their eyes. We then smashed open the pumpkins and explored them further. We used all our senses and talked about what the pumpkins smelt and felt like. We have done lots of experiments too and have made potions. We discussed what we think might happen when we added different ingredients together. We then added the ingredients and discussed what was happening to the potion. We used lots of descriptive words. We also continued our Halloween theme and made some shape wands. We discussed the different shapes and their properties such as how many sides they had and how many corners. We have also had lots of visitors to Swans, these have included vets and dentists. Sophia’s mummy is a vet and came to talk to us about her work. She also brought along a dog called ‘Pip’. We took it in turns to stroke her and looked at some x-rays. We learned how to listen to a heartbeat using a stethoscope and we also helped to bandage a teddy bear. We also had a visit from a dentist and we counted how many teeth we have. We discussed how many times a day we brush our teeth and also discussed how to look after them as well as what we should eat and what we shouldn’t including too much sugar.
