September Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, This month 22 Street Lane Nursery was inspected by Ofsted and we have great pleasure in announcing that the inspection that was carried out on Tuesday 21 st August 2018, graded 22 Street Lane Nursery as ‘Outstanding’ in ALL categories! Since opening in 2016, 22 Street Lane Nursery have maintained high standards in providing the highest quality of innovative, safe and fun childcare. Early childhood care plays a vital role in children’s development which has always been at the very heart of what we do. Our aim is to encourage and support each child in all areas of their development, thereby creating individuals who are confident and creative builders of their own futures. We would like to say a huge thank you to all parents and carers for supporting us; you can learn all about our inspection as well as read our Ofsted report on the 22 Street Lane Nursery website; www.22streetlanenursery.co.uk/ofsted-outstanding In addition to our inspection we enjoyed some wonderful activities in our setting last month; which we hope you enjoy reading all about in our newsletter.

As many of you will be aware we had our Ofsted inspection on Tuesday 21st August. We are absolutely delighted to tell you that we received OUTSTANDING in every area. This is a fantastic achievement and we are immensely proud. The Inspector spent a total of 9.5 hours inspecting the setting, she spent time talking to and questioning practitioners and children, she observed practice within all of the rooms and spent time a long period of time with Alex scrutinising policies and procedures such as safeguarding. She was also very keen to see how the nursery has developed over the past 2 years and our reflective practice. The inspection is graded against four different areas which are; • Effectiveness of Leadership and Management • Quality of Teaching, Learning and Assessment • Personal Development, behavior and welfare • Outcomes for Children We achieved an Outstanding grade in each of these areas. The inspector made the following comments which can also be read in our report which is available from our website. We would like to thank you all for you support over the last 2 years and to the parents who emailed in feedback, it was much appreciated. NEWS; September Newsletter Parents Feedback Evaluation Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback, we have collated all the feedback and did find some trends. We intend to change the following; Tapestry Information: It was felt that sometimes the information on Tapestry didn’t always match the information verbally. We will ensure in the future we use the daily sheets to give feedback rather than trying to rely on memory.

My Day At Nursery: We have made the decision to remove ‘my day at nursery’ from each of the rooms apart from Chicklets. Whilst we appreciate some parents value this written feedback we also consulted the staff team who feel it takes them a long time to complete away from children. Please be assured that you will still receive verbal feedback at the end of each day which will be provided to you from the daily sheets. We know you love seeing picture of your child each day. Therefore we will put on a daily post each day filled with pictures from your child’s room that day. Chicklets will still receive a ‘my day at nursery’ post due to them being the youngest children. We will also introduce a selection of photos from the day for Cygnets as some parents now feel that they miss the photos since we removed ‘my day at nursery’ from Cygnets room.

Equipment in Chicklets: It was noted that the equipment in Chicklets is great for the children under the age of 1 however was perhaps not as suitable as the children are much older within the Chicklets room at the moment. We have decided to invest in a climbing frame in the Chicklets room which will provide some much needed equipment for Physical Development as the children are older. Many older Chicklets will be moving next week and therefore will love to explore their new surroundings in Ducklings.

Car Park: There were a few comments about the Car Park being very busy at Peak times and the potential suggestion of a traffic island outside of nursery to help crossing a busy road. We are looking into who we would contact from Leeds City Council with regards to a traffic island however we don’t think that it would be something possible due to the volume of speed of the traffic on Street Lane. We will of course however try our best. Could we please ask all of our families to take care when using the car park in a morning and evening and be considerate to other families and use only one space. Whilst we would love to have more car park space (and potentially a one way system) we just don’t think such a significant change would be possible.

Information about upcoming events: We always try to communicate up and coming events through our monthly newsletters. We also regularly post on tapestry with events such as Mother’s Day & Grandparents days. We try to share a list of upcoming events at the home visit and these are also available outside the rooms.

NEWS; September Newsletter Information about the Early Years Curriculum: We are looking at creating a Parent portal which would have guidance for parents about what we do including our policies and procedures. We will also try to offer ideas about how you can extend activities at home through tapestry post which will include pictures of the day. We appreciate that some parents may want to follow on activities at home and some parents may not and this is entirely your choice.

Nappies/Wipes: We believe we are using one of the leading brands in nappies. Not only are Mamia nappies more cost effective than other brands, they also won the Mother and Baby award in 2017 for the best disposable nappies. If you wish for your child to wear a different brand of nappy, you are welcome to provide them.

Quorn: We have reconsidered our use of Quorn. We agree that the product is highly processed and therefore will be taken off the menu. We will still of course offer a vegetarian alternative however we will not be replacing meat with Quorn products. We are currently reviewing our menu and will share this with you as soon as it is ready.

Winter Menu: Thank you for feedback on winter menu, we will share the new menu over the next few weeks and the menu will be launched in October.

Parent Reminders; IMPORTANT Please can we remind parents that the nursery does not open until 7:30am. The staff start at 7am so that they can ensure that the room is set up and risk assessed for the children. Please could we ask you to wait until 7:30am so that the rooms are fully prepared. Thank you for your understanding.

We would also like to remind all parents to ensure that their children’s uniform is labelled. All clothing should have your child’s name in it. Whilst we take great care to ensure clothing goes in children’s bag it can difficult to keep track sometimes, especially when they look the same. Please can we politely ask that children not to bring toys from home unless it is a comforter. It can be difficult when children are bringing their own toys from nursery and they do sometimes get broken. We are going to create a library for children to borrow books. Could we ask kindly ask for any unwanted books which you may have at home which your child no longer reads.

NEWS;

Beach Party We had a fantastic day for our beach party. We all dressed up in our summer clothes and had lots of fun, it was just like being at the seaside. We had lots of beach themed activities and even had a slip n slide set up in the garden. We then had homemade fish and chips and mushy peas for our lunch in paper cones.

Carnival Week We had a great week with lots of carnival themed activities. On Friday we had a party, we dressed up in bright clothes and we had Caribbean inspired meals throughout the day. We had Avocado on toast for breakfast. Lunch was Jerk Chicken with rice and mixed vegetables followed by some Ginger cake. For tea we had Chickpea and Pineapple Salsa with Sweet Potato Wedges. We also made carnival crowns using feathers and sequins and did some carnival dancing!

Kindness Box The Cygnets have made a Kindness box. We collected food which we donated to the food bank. We collected lots of items which we took to the charity shop on Street Lane. We also had a visit from someone from Martin House and shared some videos to the children. It is really important here at 22SLN that the children understand that some families are less fortunate than themselves and it is important to give to others. Great work Cygnets!!

Growing our own herbs Some of the children have been very busy growing some herbs. They have planted rosemary, basil, thyme, coriander or oregano. We will be watching them grow over the next few weeks and using the herbs in our meals. Yum Yum!

Chicklets We have been very busy in Chicklets. We have had lots of messy play including cloud dough with animals, foot print painting with animals, soya yoghurt painting and sand play! In addition to this we also set up activities with the animal puppets and small world animals. Throughout each of these activities we practiced the sounds that the different animals made! The chicklets favourites were "roaaarr" and "wroof". We also practiced "ooo ooo ah" while eating bananas at snack time! We also had an ice and frozen soya yoghurt activity on Friday to help with some of the teething that our poorly chicklets are currently experiencing! The children loved chomping down on the fish, stars and heart shaped ice/soya yoghurt to cool their gums. Many of our Chicklets are getting ready to transition to Ducklings so they have been on lots of visits.

Ducklings We have been very physical in Ducklings. The children have enjoyed using the climbing blocks to learn to balance and walk across with and without support! They have been chasing their friends through the tunnel and up and down the climbing frame steps and slide! The Ducklings have been exploring different ways to kick or throw a ball and have started to pass them to each other and are learning to share their resources! The Ducklings have shown an interest in shape sorters and inset boards recently and are becoming very good at matching up the right pictures! We have also had a lot of time in the big garden and have been riding the big bikes, digging with diggers and trucks in the sand and making all sorts of creations in the mud kitchen! The children have also discovered that the slopes in the garden on the artificial grass make for amazing slides that they can access freely! Finally, the children have been continuing their Settle Visits to their new Goslings room and are doing amazing! We always hear glowing reports from the Goslings team who have been making lovely bonds with their new key children!

Goslings We have had feathers everywhere! The children have loved exploring the coloured playdough, and towering up the coloured and mirrored blocks. The Carnival day was amazing, the effort was fabulous and the children enjoyed everything set up such as the carnival head band's that we made. The Goslings also enjoyed the face painting. The Goslings have explored every colour we can find! The Goslings have been very physical in the garden and on the balcony. We have used the tunnel in different ways, as a route out of the teepee and crawling and sliding through. The Goslings have enjoyed the large scale walking blocks, towering them up and walking along them together. Our Goslings have been very busy blowing bubbles and making their own. We have filled the tough tray with water and bubble bath and have used straws to blow and make lots of their own bubbles in the tray. The Goslings have shared the straws wonderfully and were very encouraging about everyone's bubbles.

Cygnets We have been extremely busy in Cygnets. We celebrated 'Construction Week' and the children were really interested in all the activities. They used big building blocks to create helicopters, aeroplanes, buses, and even a pirate ship! They took it in turns to be drivers and pilots, and they worked in groups to make wonderful creations! They wore high-visibility vests and helmets, and some of them even drew maps and plans about what they were making! We have been on a couple of outings this week. We went to the Charity shop to make some donations. We had a great time and not only did we support our local community, we also learnt about road safety.

Swans We have had lots of fun in Swans, planting our own herbs. We talked about them growing and what they need in order to grow. We can’t wait to try them. Swans had a wonderful day at the Beach Party and they even made their very own slip and slide. All children and staff had a brilliant day and enjoyed their fish and chips, just like they were at the seaside. Many Swans have now left to go to school and we would like to wish them all the best when they start school. We have had lots of celebrations with the children as they have been celebrating their last day with us at 22 Street Lane. We have been welcoming the Cygnets who have been transitioning to Swans.
