Bex Sunley Joins Our Bank Staff We would like to introduce you to Bex Sunley who will be volunteering at 22SLN every Wednesday and working as a bank member of staff. “I am currently studying Childcare Level 2 to pursue a career in something I am very passionate about. Being a part of a child’s first learning steps has always been a career path I have wanted to take. Seeing their faces light up when they learn something new brings me so much joy! Throughout the times I have spent childminding and studying EYFS, I have gained many skills that can positively impact children’s lives to help them grow, learn and develop their social skills as well as many others. I find working with children fulfilling and very rewarding and I look forward to enhancing my skills further at an outstanding nursery.”

Staff Training and Annual Awards - October 29th On Tuesday 29th October, the nursery will be closed to due to our team training day. HAYLEY’S STORY

On 12th June 2019, Hayley was admitted to hospital whilst working in Ibiza with what they first thought was a urine infection. This progressed rapidly and she began to lose the feeling in her legs and arms. Two days later Hayley was completely paralysed from the neck down and had been heavily sedated. Her lungs had failed, and she was now being supported by a ventilator and being fed through a tube. After spending 2 weeks in intensive care in Ibiza, Hayley spent 3 weeks in Majorca, where she received special treatment called Plasma Exchange Therapy, a process that cleans the blood in hope To reverse the paralysis. After having 12 sessions Hayley was able To move her right arm and began to feel her left arm again. This was not the result the doctors had hoped for, but slowly Hayley’s muscles were getting stronger.

Hayley faced obstacles on her journey in Majorca, she suffered a collapsed lung which set her recovery back slightly. However, she pulled through and was flown home by air ambulance on July 21st 2019. Hayley has since made great improvements and is now breathing on her own and eating a puréed diet. Currently Hayley has no feeling or movement in her legs and requires one-to-one care throughout the day. The amazing physio team are helping to build her muscles back, working on her arms, hands and core. Hayley has lost all her independence and dignity, but the amazing staff keep her going. After 10 weeks of tests and samples being sent off the neurologists and doctors have told us that 99% of these results have been negative. We may never find out why this happened or what we are dealing with. We have been reassured that Hayley will recover, however, to what extent we do not know. The doctors have given a timeframe that she will be in hospital for around a year. We stay positive but it may be that the damage will cause lifelong problems and difficulties. For Hayley this isn’t an option, she is very determined and positive, and we all have hope she will pull through this and make a full recovery. The bravery and strength she has shown has inspired us all, we are so very proud of how she is coping. We have set up a JustGiving page to raise money for Hayley and to help pay for any further costs she may incur in her recovery and rehabilitation. As the future is uncertain regarding Hayley’s recovery, it may be that we look into private physiotherapy after her time in hospital or she may require specialist equipment. With this comes a cost, with a specialist neurological rehabilitation at home costing over £3,700 per week. Any donations really will make such a difference to Hayley’s recovery and rehabilitation, and as you can see, she has made great progress over the last few months and is still smiling. She is our brave daughter, sister, and friend, and we are so proud of her.

Even if you’re not able to donate, we thank you for taking the time to read Hayley’s story. We would also appreciate it if you’re able to share the JustGiving page on social media, and if you have any fundraising ideas, we would love to hear about them. Love from Hayley and her family

Makaton Sign Language

As part of our team training day, we learned the basic signs of Makaton and how these can support the children in our setting. What is Makaton? Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Who is Makaton for? Makaton is the UK's leading language programme for adults and children with learning or communication difficulties. It is also used by everyone who shares their lives, for example, parents and other family members, friends and carers, and education and health professionals. Makaton is used for teaching communication, language and literacy skills with children and adults who are at an early stage of communication and language development. This structured approach can also help people who are learning English as an additional language, helping them to communicate straightaway, whilst also supporting their learning. We will be teaching Makaton to the children at nursery and would like to share a sign with you every month!

Dish of the Month

Cod and Salmon Fish Pie

See our past selections on: 22streetlanenursery.co.uk/dish-of-the-month/

Ingredients

• 1kg Maris Piper potatoes, peeled and halved • 400ml milk (plus an extra splash for the potatoes) • 25g butter (plus an extra lump for the potatoes) • 25g plain flour • 4 spring onions, finely sliced • 1x pack fish pie mix (cod, salmon, smoked haddock etc, weight around 320g-400g)

• 1 tsp Dijon or English mustard • ½ a 25g pack, or a small bunch of chives, finely snipped

• Handful frozen sweetcorn • Handful frozen petits pois • Handful grated cheddar

Method 1. Heat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas Mark 6. 2. Put 1kg potatoes, peeled and halved, in a saucepan and pour over enough water to cover them. Bring to the boil and then simmer until tender. 3. When cooked, drain thoroughly and mash with a splash of milk and a knob of butter. Season with ground black pepper. 4. Put 25g butter, 25g plain flour and 4 finely sliced spring onions in another pan and heat gently until the butter has melted, stirring regularly. Cook for 1-2 mins. 5. Gradually whisk in 400ml milk using a balloon whisk if you have one. Bring to the boil, stirring to avoid any lumps and sticking at the bottom of the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes until thickened. 6. Take off the heat and stir in 320g-400g mixed fish, 1 tsp Dijon or English mustard, a small bunch of finely snipped chives, handful of sweetcorn and handful of petits pois. Spoon into an ovenproof dish or 6-8 ramekins. 7. Spoon the potato on top and sprinkle with a handful of grated cheddar cheese. 8. Pop in the oven for 20-25 mins or until golden and bubbling at the edges. Alternatively, cover and freeze the pie or mini pies for another time.

October Newsletter Chicklets Room News

We have had a busy September in the Chicklets room. We have been welcoming all our new little babies into the room and spending lots of time with them to make them feel comfortable and settled within the room. We have been getting to the know the children’s routines and their likes and dislikes. We have recently re-arranged the Chicklets room and added some beautiful new resources. The Chicklets have enjoyed exploring their new environments, accessing the heuristic baskets and finding their way to the climbing frame. We have been taking part in lots of messy play this month which is always a favourite. The babies have enjoyed making marks in the shaving foam, feeling the different textures in the oat play and sprinkling the shredded paper. The Chicklets have enjoyed exploring the outdoor environment, they have been reading lots of books in the sunshine and exploring the messy play on offer outside such as the sand and buckets. We have taken the Chicklets on trips to Roundhay Park in the buggies. The babies enjoyed visiting the ducks and swans followed by a snooze in the buggy on the way back to nursery! Next month, we are going to introduce baby sensory sessions, each session will have a specific theme. We will be taking the babies in small groups to the parent’s room where they will get the opportunity to explore the sensory lights and other sensory materials!

Ducklings Room News

The Ducklings have been very busy exploring this month! We have had lots of new little Ducklings join throughout September and we must say that they are all doing so well! They are making special bonds with their Key Person and becoming familiar with their environment. As we prepare for Autumn, the Ducklings enjoyed an Autumn walk to Roundhay Park where we looked at all the trees changing colour and the fallen leaves on the floor. We spoke about the different colours such as red, yellow green and orange. We collected our favourite leaves and explored the textures closer in a tough tray when we got back to nursery. We also saw goslings and ducklings on our walk and stopped to have a look, the Ducklings really enjoyed the walk and were using lots of single words throughout such as “leaf, quack and duck!” We have also been celebrating Italy as our Country of the Month, the Ducklings have been painting flags using their mark-making skills and we have been becoming familiar with the colours red and green. The Ducklings all took part in an Italian cooking class and made some healthy tortilla pizzas. The children used their fine motor skills to add their favourite toppings such as cheese, tomato and basil. We then cooked our pizzas in the oven and enjoyed them for our tea…yum!

Goslings Room News

This month, many of the Goslings children have celebrated their second birthdays! To celebrate, we have taken part in music, singing and dancing. After lots of practicing, most of the Goslings can now join in with singing happy birthday to their friends. The Goslings have been very helpful in making yummy cake to take home as part of these celebrations. The Goslings did this by pressing the different buttons on weighing scales to help us measure out all the ingredients needed for a jam sponge cake. They then helped add the different ingredients to a large mixing bowl and take turns mixing it together. We continued to follow the children’s interest in cooking by arranging for some of the Goslings to go on a trip to Haley & Clifford on Street Lane. The staff there donated a yummy lemon drizzle cake for the Goslings to decorate at the café and sell at the Macmillan coffee morning. The cake looked beautiful and the children thoroughly enjoyed working together to decorate it. This month we have also been busy making some enhancements to the baby garden! We have added four circle chalk boards which the Goslings have loved making marks on. In addition to this, we have also created a music wall using different pots and pans. The Goslings have been using a wide range of tools such as wooden spoons, ladles and whisks to experiment with the different sounds they can make. Well done Goslings!

Cygnets Room News

The Cygnets have had a fantastic month and have been settling into their new room and following the new daily routine really well! We have been very busy celebrating our Country of the Month 'Italy', one of the Cygnets brought in some of their Italian books from home and sang 'Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush' in Italian for the rest of their friends, they also told us how to say the name of some fruits in Italian. We then made our own tortilla wrap pizzas using tomato sauce, cheese and basil. The Cygnets have enjoyed spending time in the allotment area, we have been very busy digging up all the potatoes that were planted in the Summer, the Cygnets then cleaned the potatoes, cut them in half and drizzled them with some olive oil and mixed herbs before giving them to Chris to cook for us in the oven. We are thoroughly enjoying exploring our seasons, in particular, Autumn. We have been on a walk to Roundhay Park collecting many Autumn themed objects including leaves, sticks, acorns and conkers. The Cygnets have been using their listening ears as we listen for the crunching of the leaves and the tapping of the sticks. We have also been very creative as we have made many crafts using the leaves and sticks that we have collected at the park and the garden.

Swans Room News

The Swans have been very busy throughout September and have celebrated a number of exciting events. We started the month by welcoming all of our new children into the new room. The children have been getting to know the room; exploring each different area of provision and learning the ‘Swans Golden Rules’! We also invited the children to bring in an ‘All About Me’ bag containing 5 items, and the Swans really enjoyed sharing these with their friends during circle time at the beginning of September. We then continued with our theme ‘All About Me’ with the children designing their own self-portraits by looking in mirrors and using a variety of mark making tools. We then began exploring looking at our families discussing who is in our family and why they are so special! The Swans all enjoyed bringing in their family photos for our family tree and using these to draw their own family pictures. We have also been learning about why every family is different and unique; linking this to our Book of the Month ‘We Are All Different’ and learning about how families can have lots of similarities and differences. Finally, as always, we have been participating in lots of phonics and maths activities, including threading, practising writing names, matching objects to numeral cards and many more. The Swans have had a fantastic and very busy month and are looking forward to lots more fun next month now that all the new children have settled in so well!

Car Park As you are aware, there are double yellow lines outside the nursery which have been put there for the safety of the children. Please can we ask that parents do not park on them, and also be mindful of parking over more than one space in the car park. As you can appreciate, we have very limited parking, and so the car park can become very busy. Drop Off and Collection Can we kindly remind you that we open at 7:30am and cannot accept children into the nursery before this time. We close at 6:00pm and any parents that pick up after this time will be charged. Thank you for your cooperation. High Temperatures & Fevers Please can we remind parents that children cannot attend nursery if they have a high temperature (over 38 ° C). If a child develops a temperature whilst at nursery, parents will be called to collect them, as supported by our policies and procedures. We can administer non- prescribed Calpol for a temperature, although we must first receive permission in writing. HMRC Additional Funding Code (3 & 4 year old - 30 hours) If you are eligible and in receipt of additional 3 & 4 year-old funding, look out for a prompt every three months from HMRC to reconfirm your details so that your eligibility can be re-assessed. If you do not do this, please note that we are unable to claim the funding on your behalf. Parents Suggestions We continue to welcome all feedback from parents. If you would like to make a suggestion, then please post this in our ‘Parents Suggestion Box’ which is based on reception. Alternatively, you can speak to a member of staff. Labels in Clothing To avoid items being lost, please can you ensure that your child’s uniform is clearly labelled including their coats, hats, scarves and wellies. If your child brings gloves to nursery, we strongly advise for these to be attached and threaded through their coat to avoid any gloves going missing. Contacting the Nursery Please can we kindly ask parents to try and only call the nursery rooms if necessary. It can be very difficult for the staff to keep coming to the phones when they are trying to look after the children and take appropriate breaks. Please note if ever we have a concern, we would always call so please be assured that they are having a good day unless we call you. Thank you for your understanding. Wipes Please note that although we provide nappies as part of our offering, wipes are not included in this. It has been noted that lots of children are coming to nursery without nappy wipes. Can we kindly remind parents to ensure that there is always a supply available for your child. Your child’s key person will remind you when they are running low. Moving forwards, we will be charging £15.00 per month to any parents that fails to bring wipes.
