June Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to the June Newsletter, and as always, warm greetings to the new families who have joined us recently. We have had another busy month at nursery learning about Eid and exploring Pakistan as our Country of the Month. Woodwork classes have started back up in the Swans Room, where the children have been busy working together to create a bird box for the garden. They have enjoyed getting dressed up in all the protective gear and using different tools to get hands-on with this group project. We also had a special guest at the nursery as 'Ivy the Giant Millipede' came to visit. The children had the opportunity to hold the millipede and enjoyed talking about how many legs it had. For those that wanted to, they were able to hold Ivy and feel her tickly legs as she crawled along their hands. With some warmer weather ahead of us, we will getting active by celebrating the World Triathlon Championship Series, as well as enjoying some new tasty treats during Healthy Eating Week. To find out more, please read on…

STAFF NEWS

Chloe Bradshaw will be leaving the Goslings Room

We are sad to inform you that Chloe Bradshaw will be leaving us on Friday 11th June. Chloe will be deeply missed by all our staff, children and parents, but we wish her the best of luck in her new career.

New Cygnets Practitioner: Joanna Sapeta

New Bank Staff Team Member: Valentina Benavente "I am passionate about helping children to develop their personalities and watching them learn about the world in the process. Being part of that process is what I most enjoy when working with children. Therefore, I have worked with children, of various ages, as a volunteer for over a year in a private nursery in Venezuela. In my experience, I have learned that every child feels and understands the world differently. That is why I take care of knowing and adapting to each child to get the best out of them and to help them build their personality and confidence. I am excited to be working in 22 Street Lane Nursery helping the team and the parents! In my spare time, I enjoyed playing tennis and performing folkloric dances. Also, I love spending time with my family travelling around the world and knowing different cultures." "I have many years of experience working with children between 2.5-4.5 years old and hold a Level 5 qualification in ‘Childhood Studies’ in Poland. In the UK I worked for over five years as a Senior Practitioner in Preschool Room. I am an enthusiastic, creative, and hardworking person, and am passionate about working with children and constantly motivated to improve their learning. I love working and having fun with children whilst ensuring they develop their skills and grow in confidence as individuals. I am happy to be a part of their childhood memories."

May Country of the Month (Pakistan) Celebrations

During May we celebrated Pakistan as the Country of the Month to tie into our Eid festivities. The younger children have enjoyed exploring the colours of the Pakistani flag in messy play, whilst the older children have been designing their own flags with tissue paper and shiny gold paper.

Some of the children had the opportunity to even make their own Mango Lassi and took turns to use the blender and mix up all the ingredients!

Eid Celebrations

The children have been celebrating Eid this month and learning about the customs and traditions that are followed during the festival. The children enjoyed making their own Eid Mubarak pictures consisting of stars and moons, as well as creating Henna Hands by copying some of the beautiful henna patterns they learnt about. Another popular activity involved the children making their own Baklava with fruit, which they loved trying as their snack. Thank you to all our families who shared their lovely decorations and photographs with us last month.

Country of the Month - Portugal (8-12th June)

This month, we will be learning about Portugal as the Country of the Month. Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture, for example, seafood dishes like salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes. The children will have the opportunity to learn about the customs and traditions of Portugal, as well as the history of the country. They will also have the chance to learn some key Portuguese words.

Did you know?

Portugal has the second-longest bridge in the world. The Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon is 7.6 miles / 12.3 km long!

This will give you an opportunity to speak to your child’s Key Person about their development and life at nursery. Please note we can only allocate 10 minutes per family. If you would like to make an appointment, please speak to your child’s Key Person to book a slot for the following dates

Chicklets, Goslings and Swans: Tuesday 8th June Ducklings and Cygnets: Tuesday 15th June

Nursery Photo Day: Monday 7th June

We would like to remind parents that we have the nursery photographer coming into nursery on Monday 7th June. If your child does not attend nursery on a Monday but you would like them to have their photo taken, please contact Dee Sturges on dee@22streetlanenursery.co.uk and we can arrange a time slot for you.

We also require you to pre-register your child before Monday 7th June, as this will enable you to gain quick access to your child's photographs and the opportunity to purchase them. To do this, you will need to go to https://order.artsphotography.co.uk and enter the following code: JRP6B2K You will then be asked to register your child, by using your child's full school register name and selecting which room they are in. Next enter your email address and pre-register. By pre-registering, when the photos are ready you will receive a private access code via an automatic email notification to inform you that your child's photos are now ready to be viewed and purchased.

Nursery Car Park Update

We have had a number of parents asking about the re-opening of the car park. Unfortunately, due to safeguarding issues under the current government guidance, we cannot look to open the car park until its safe for all parents and children to start being dropped off again through the main reception again. There are many logistics involved with this decision as the nursery is such a large setting, and we are awaiting more information before a decision is made. We will review the situation again in 6-8 weeks and update you as soon as we can. Please can we remind parents not to park on the double yellow lines outside of the nursery, as well as in front of the vehicle and pedestrian gates, as this creates a safety risk and obstruction for parents and children.

Swans Graduation Ceremony: Friday 9th July

We’d like to remind Swans Parents that our ‘Class of 2021’ graduation ceremony will be taking place on Friday 9 th July. We will be sharing more details shortly on what we have planned for the big day!.

Healthy Eating Week: W/C 14 th - 18 th June

We will be celebrating the British Nutrition Foundation’s 'Healthy Eating Week’ in June. Healthy Eating Week aims to promote healthy eating, drinking and physical activity. We will be talking to the children about healthy eating and will be allowing the children to make their own healthy snacks.

World Triathlon Championship Series - 5th & 6th June We are really fortunate this year to be able to watch this exciting event from our doorsteps. As many of the races take in routes around 22 Street Lane and Roundhay Park, this will be a great opportunity to support the athletes and to challenge ourselves too. We would like to encourage the athletes by making bunting and posters to display in our windows over the weekend of 5th and 6th June. We'd also like to invite all our families and staff to take the Triathlon Challenge and push themselves to complete a swim, run or toddle, and a bike ride in any form during the week leading up to the triathlon. We would love you to share your photos with us on Tapestry and hope the staff team will too. The Curiosity Approach at 22 Street Lane Curiosity is innate and we consider it to already be residing in all children, but for these interests to be activated, we must promote these situations and environments and develop the right kind of relationships with the child. We hope that their so that curiosity explodes and blooms as we continue to find new ways to engage and develop their imaginations. To accomplish this, we're giving the children the time, space and attention to create it. The Curiosity Approach is about creating that irresistible environment for learning and development, that recognises the uniqueness of each child, of each human being, of each citizen of now. Which is something that we believe every child deserves! There is no other reason needed, but for the JOY of following their own thoughts and thinking. To be creative and absorbed in the experience, to be ARTISTS , to collaborate with peers, to discuss, discover, explore and develop inquiry and investigation. Deep learning happening right before our eyes, and at Curiosity Approach settings all pre-determined outcomes are pushed aside, and the results speak for themselves. Because we have TRUST in the children, trust in the process and the proof is in the pudding, rather than what we staple on a display board or send home each day. Children choose to participate if they wish and advance with excitement and curiosity.

Teaching our children through heart and soul is what we must aspire to do. Look closely at their faces, how incredible to witness such pure joy. There’s truly no better reward!

“If you don’t love what you do, you won’t do it with much conviction or passion.” ~ Mia Hamm

Continuing our sharing of the A-Z of the Curiosity Approach, we are showcasing E & F this month:

Enchanting Environments - At the Curiosity Approach our aim is to create a world of magic and wonder, a place to tinker and explore. A special place where children are the centre of everything, filling their hearts and minds with a sense of incredible awe and wonder.

Future (the next generation) - In the words of Whitney Houston we “believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way…” Current toys & technology are reducing the innate skills of curiosity. Inquisitiveness, deep level thinking and communication & social skills are declining. Getting the learning environment right helps take massive leaps in protecting and embedding these innate skills.

Chicklets Room News The children have shown a big interest in recognising their facial features this month. The Chicklets have enjoyed spotting their features in the mirror and have been pointing to their features during the song ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes”. We have been celebrating Eid this month. The Chicklets have enjoyed looking at the Ramadan book with staff members and learning about the traditions. The children also enjoyed making their own Eid crafts consisting of the moon and stars. In line with Eid, we have also been celebrating Pakistan as our 'Country of the Month'. To celebrate Pakistan, we have been doing lots of messy play to explore the colours of the Pakistani flag. During the times we have had good weather, the children have enjoyed going on walks to Roundhay Park. The children spotted lots of dogs on the walk and we even stopped off at the lake to say hello to the Swans. We have also been accessing the baby garden during the day too. The Chicklets have shown an interest in the mud where they have been digging and filling the different pots and pans. We also noticed a ladybird in the garden on the leaves which the children were fascinated with. The children have continued to explore different types of messy play this month. The favourite so far has been the shaving foam play where the children have made marks with the different natural resources. The Chicklets have also enjoyed exploring the sand and filling the different pots up with it.

Ducklings Room News

The Ducklings have been really interested in the 'Bear Hunt' book at nursery, so we decided to do a Bear Hunt sensory walk following on from this. We started the Bear Hunt by going through the 'splishy splashy' water where the Ducklings got to splash in the water tray saying 'wet' and 'splash, splash!’. The Ducklings then had a turn at going through the 'squelch splashy' mud where they could feel the texture of the mud between their feet. The Ducklings then 'tiptoed' quietly through the cave, where they eventually found 'A BEAR!' all the children got a chance to find the bear and they were very excited! The children have also shown an interest in mini-beasts over the past few weeks and enjoy exploring them with our mini-beast tuff trays. We have enjoyed using our magnifying glasses to explore the mud searching for our minibeasts. We have also continued this interest to the garden where we found worms, spiders and bugs! To extend this learning, Hannah brought in her pet to the nursery for us all to see. Her name is Ivy the Giant African Millipede, the Ducklings enjoyed feeling all the little legs and tried counting how many legs she, has but it was far too many! We also enjoyed feeding her watermelon and stroking her, we spoke about how she felt and even what colour she was. We loved her. One of the little Ducklings said she was ‘amazing’. The Ducklings have also been joining in with Eid celebrations this month. We have been busy painting moons and stars to take home as decorations. The Ducklings have also enjoyed reading books about Eid at carpet time.

Goslings Room News

The Goslings have had an exciting month with the arrival of the caterpillars, and we loved watching them grow week-by-week. We watched them eating their food and wriggling their bodies around, and we've learnt that they create themselves a home called a 'cocoon' which happens before they transform into butterflies. They are currently at that stage now and the Goslings are very excited to see what happens next. Based on the interest of the caterpillars, we incorporated the book 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' into our daily activities. This story is one of our favourites, so it has been a good opportunity to understand how the caterpillars transform and learn what happens in the process. We have been creating our own caterpillars in a variety of ways, from using cardboard tubes in paint to rolling balls in the playdough to create their bodies. The Goslings also enjoyed creating the large scale stars and moons for Eid this month, and they especially loved being able to show their parents and carers as we presented it in the Nursery window for everyone to see. We worked well as a team, taking turns, and sharing the equipment to paint and stick materials, as well as working together to make star biscuits, listening carefully to the instructions, and helping to measure out the ingredients. We explored further into the culture of Pakistan and how Eid is celebrated which gave us the inspiration to create some henna style crafts.

Cygnets Room News

We have focused on looking at all types of animals especially mini-beasts and insects, as the Cygnets have taken a great interest, especially in the garden where they found lots of wiggly worms. The Cygnets have also enjoyed learning all about life cycles, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' is one in particular that the Cygnets have enjoyed and we are very excited to welcome our caterpillars to the room! The Cygnets also were very excited to meet Ivy, a Giant African Millipede who has over 100 legs! The Cygnets were given the opportunity to hold Ivy and we spoke about what she felt like and that her legs were really tickly. The Cygnets had lots of fun meeting her, we then looked at other giant insects such as a giant snail. The Cygnets have had so much fun this month, as we have been able to take some trips to Roundhay Park. The Cygnets have had so much fun exploring the fairy woodland, looking at all of the trees that have been carved out to create a magical storyland. The Cygnet children took some time at the park to do some mindfulness exercises, where we lay on the grass and closed our eyes listening to the sounds around us. As Spring has continued, the children have been enjoying planting different seeds in the garden, and they've recently planted some potatoes in our allotment area. The children have been working alongside the Swans children to achieve this, making sure that they're being properly watered every day. We look forward to watching them grow and then cooking with them once they are ready to be pulled from the ground.

Swans Room News

At the start of the month, the Swans learnt all about transport. The Swans have been showing lots of interest in different transport modes recently, having discussions about how they travel to Nursery each day, if they have been on a plane before or not and what their favourite mode of transport is. The children enjoyed participating in lots of creative activities, including creating their own train tracks (also linked to our sound of the week - 'T'), cutting and sticking different transport modes into the correct boxes on a template and creating their own trains and planes using different shapes, and assembling them in the correct order before sticking them down and decorating their creations. The Swans have also been celebrating Eid this month, learning all about the festival, what the celebration is about and how it is celebrated. The children enjoyed watching some videos of people enjoying the celebration around the world, looking at the different festivals celebrated by different people, making our own Eid Mubarak pictures, drawing some beautiful and intricate henna designs and making some yummy mango lassi to enjoy! A big thank you to anyone who has contributed to our learning about Eid and contributed any items to our 'Book of the Month' display which is linked to Eid too! Throughout the month the children have also been very busy with woodwork classes, as we have started a new project to make a birdhouse. The children have really enjoyed measuring the pieces of wood and using the tools with help from our practitioners. It’s almost finished now, so keep an eye out for it in the Big Garden!
